One afternoon not long ago a New York policeman nuiuefl Martin Scbroe dor of the Yorkvllle court siiuad saw a man mimed Frank t'arroll at work In a lumber yard. t'HrrolI siw tbe po- HL WAITED FOR CAKBtlLL TO VM1 TO THE 51 Bfv t Uceuian at tbe same moment and. dropping his. tools, ran in the direction of the East river. "Stop that man!" cried Schroeder. racing after t'arroll. "I have a war rant for his arrest." The crowd did not beed tbe pollov mau's order, but joined in the chase. Carroll was not as lively on hi feet as tbe policeman and was nearly over taken when be reached a pier. He dived head'oug into the liver. Svhroeder. panting and tbe sweat running down his face, aeeing that he bad missed his man by a narrow max gin. waited patiently for Carroll to come to tbe surface. One minute pass ed and t'arroll did not appear. "Get a row boat quick"' shouted tbe policeman. "He'll be caught In the current." Tbe crowd watched with the police man, and after a wait of thirty min utes Scbroeder gave up tbe Job and told the excited crowd that hi man bad chosen a watery grave In prefer ence to a cell. "Poor man," said Scbroeder. "to die like a rat In this river, and all on ac count of a warrant for a trifling of fense. I pity his wife and children." Then the policeman called up police headquarters and told the story of the escape and bow his man had probably drowned. A reporter learned a much different story at the borne of Carroll. His wife said that be was not drowned, but had made a clever escape from the police man by swimming under water for nearly two blocks. Carroll la a life saver of reputation and claims to have rescued thirty -two persons from drown ing. "My husband has a gold medal and several silver ones from J. Wealey Jones and the Volunteer Life Saving association for bravery." said Mrs. Carroll. "He la the champion swim mer of the ward and can easily stay under water for an eighth of a mile with bis clothes on. My Prank drown ed not on your life!" Carroll remained under water for nearly Ave minutes, be told hla wife. His wet clothing prevented him from making speed, but be reached a pier at a distance from that where his pur suer was, safely and out of breath. He went borne almost exhausted. A change of clothing and a cup of hot coffee made blni feel like a new man. Hia wife then cooked bis dinner, and one hour after bis escape from the po liceman he was back at bis Job han dling lumber. Carroll, who Is thirty-eight years old, is one of the best known charac ters In tbe Gas House section of New York. His career as a life saver be gan twenty years ago, and he baa made a rescue each year since. He baa sev eral children. It was said at tbe police station that tbe w.-irrant for his arrest was an old one for uousupport. obtained by hla wife. Mrs. Carroll said she did not ask for the warrant. "They may catch Frank Carroll on land," said his wife, "but the police will have to hire a couple of submarine boats If be once gets Into tbe water." A Poor Way, ye live for those who love us. But.
