Tbey are more appreciated from the fact that they came fro-n the former borne of the editor in this city, now the property of Mr. Baker. Mrs. Jessie B Patrick and children came up Wednesday from Roseburg to spend a week with Mr. and Mrs. John Patrick, parents of Jessie B. Patrick. Mr. Patrick is a conductor on the through freight on the Roseburg-Ash-laud run, and was unable to get a lay off at this time to visit the home folks. Grants Pass Currier. Coon, the successful berry and fruitgrower of Dillard, presented the Plaindealer with some blackberries of the "Mammoth" variety Saturday which were over one inch in length and of excellent flavor. M , . Coon informed us that he has five acres in muskmellons and four acres in watermellons this year. The former will be ready for market about August 1st, nd the latter about 10 days or two weeks later. H. H. Howe, of Golden, and his part ner, E. K. Klalock, have bonded to the Greenback Mining company for J15;000, a group of six mining claims which they own in the Immediate neighborhood of the Martha mine. The amount of de velopment on the property is very lim ited, but a vein of telluride ore recently opened assays very high and indications point to a large amount of valuable ore The vein runs from 18 inches to two feet, anl is increasing in width as a greater depth is reached. News. WELL PLANNED JAIL BREAK FRUSTRATED Sheriff H. T. McClallcn's Alertness Only Prevented the Escape of Four Prisoners A bold and well planned jail break was frustrated by Sheriff 11. T. McCUl len this morning. I'pon his return from a visit north this morning he soon pro ceeded to the county jail whereupon one prisoner was found missing. He lined the others up and commenced question ing them when the missing lad came forth from between the steel cage aud the wall where he had been diligently . irking since Saturday evening in an endeavor to cut u hole through the ce ment and brick wall. With an excuse to get some wood, the two lads held for stealing a watch were permitted by De -uty Hogurd to go into the corridor Satur day evening and upon returning one ol them stepped into the narrow passage between the cage and brick wall Unob served. A search revealed the fact that he had within his possession a dat piece of iron 11' inches long and one -nch wide ; I case knife nicked like a saw ami a' mall saw made from a spring from a sole of a shoe. It was anticiiate I bj the four culprits in the jail that'a break might !e effected tonight, J.K Barns, the tilendale alleged murderer having plotted the break. The plot was discov ered none too so n and now Sheriff Mc Clalleu is trying to figure out how the articles found on the youthful criminal came into the lad's possession.
