Mrs". F. L. Russell, of Oakland, who is

Kelly, of this city, met with a painful
accident Tuesday evening while on her
way to her daughter" residence from
the depot. Mrs. Rassell by stepping on
a pea-pod on the sidewalk, slipped and
in falling sprained her ankle severely,
making it impossible for her to walk
without the aid of a cane.
Burb Brockway left this city Tuesday
for Gardiner where he will take the
steamer to San Pedro, Calif. He will
then visit Los Angeles and from there
proceed to Buffalo N. Y., where he will r
visit relatives and be in attendance at
the national convention of the B. P. O.
Elks, which meets in Buffalo on July 10. I

torney General Crawford was seeking to
lure tbe speckled beauties of Silver
Creek to partake of his bait, Monday
morning, be stepped up m a slippery
stone, and the rest can be imagined
: The judge says that he merely became

where he was sitting, until he felt the
water rising around him. But whatever
' happened, the one thing is certain, that

TECHNICAL FORESTRY ADDED TO
SUPERVISOR BARTRUM'S RESERVE
There has been added to tlm Southern
Division of the Cascade Range and Ash
land Forest Reserves, under the super
vision of S 0 Barfrum, Forest Supervit-
or, a department of technical forestry,
and Mr A E Cohoon, of Washington, D
C, Forest Assistant, has been added to
Mr Bartrum'a forestry force, and will
assist in the technical and scientific
work of these important reserves. The
government considers the Cascade
Range Forest Reserve one of the most
important reserves in the United States,
and Mr Hartrum lieing one of the oldest
and most efficient supervisors in the
Forest Service Department ban placed at
his disposal one of the best trained as
sistants in the forestry department, in
the person of Mr A B Cohoon.
Kalph Breedeu is visiting at Riddle
this week.
Mrs. C. W. Martvn and son, Wallace,
are visiting friends at Ashland.
Morton Hadley returned home last
evening from a visit to Portland.
Mrs John Natch and son, left this
morning for Portland to visit, the ex

A special train, consisting of seven
coaches, carrying the California editors
who have been in Portland, proceeded
the south bound overland Tuesday on

Mrs A. B. C. Whipple, of Dixonville,

to the Douglas County exhibit at Port
land. The boijuet contained 30 shades
of sweet peas all tied in separate
bunches.

city Tuesday evening w ith two boys, who
were charged with stealing a watch from
a man named Mclkmald who recently
arrived in this city from the east. The
theft occurred in one of Roseburg's nu
merous bawdy houses last Saturday anil
the boys were arrested and held at Junc

the city jail Tuesday night but were u. t

youthful prisoners had crawled out

heard from. However the watch was
recovered and will be returned to its

Jarvis arrested the mistress of the
house where the rob! ery occurred and
arraigned her on a charge of selling
liquor in a dry precinct to which charge
she pleaded guilty and was lined ' by
Judge Orcutt, which tine was paid.
Tbe youthful pick pockets who escaped
from the city jail Tuesday wrrerevai
tured at Drain and were returned lo
this city last night and will come up for
trial tomorrow morning.

Justice Long's Court
Edward Tabler, a young man charge!
with obtaining money under false pre
tenses from Mrs. H. H. Chivengton. a
waitress, was acquitted at the prelimi
nary examination Monday aftern-wn.
He was immediately re arrested on a
charge of forgery and was held to await
the action of the circuit court on that
charge. J. A. Buchanan is acting as
