Wright, and his collection of rare fire arms. Mr. Wright is a brother of W. T. Wright and Mrs. D. S. Weat of Kose- burg and ia well and favorably known here. The Journal aaid : From the odd corners of the globe during the last 15 years a Portland letter-carrier has gathered a collection of small arms and other weapon which is undoubtly one of the most remark able of its kind in existence. The col lector is Lee S. Wright, carrier So 3, in the local postoffice, and the collec tion, of which he ia justly proud, oc cupies numerious walls and shelves at his home in this city. Mr. Wright began his collection in 1890, and since then, with the aid ot rare good luck and of friends who have made lrequent trips abroad, he has pushed the search that has been so well rewarded. There ia hardly a country, people or age but has in some way con tributed to the fulfillment of his de sires, and a visit to his home, where his Three hundred years is the estimat-d are of a Korean pistol in the collection. It is 20 inches in length and whh tired by a slow-burning hire, with a match lock. The name of the original owner is inscribed in silver on top ol the bar rel. The collection has a Klohert pistol lrouglit from Manila and presented by Dr. Sanford Whiting A pair of curious Japanese pistols al ways attract the attention of persons examining the collection. They were secured by Dr. J. Hunter Wells while touring Japan. One is an engraded cap-and-ball pistol while the other is brass, using blanx primed shells, central tire, and is loaded by hand as a mu..:. -loading gun. Both have attach ments with which they may be earned ou the per son without the use of a holster. A small ffcatibf single shot pistol in the collection is reminiscent of the great hood at Heppner. Oregon, June 14, 1903. After the water had BUbsiiled the ervolver was found. It has never been learned who owned the tiny weap on or what part, if auy it played in the great horror. E. E. Drake, manager of the V. II. C. company of San Trancisco, contributed to the collection a verv small cartridge pistol of the single shot variety. It has a silver handle and weighs oue and three quarters ounces. It is one of the smallest weapons in existence. A Colt.s dragon 45 calibre revolver, which is said to have been used in the Mexican war, is a part of the collection. With the weapon a man by the name ISarnum committed suicide la years ago FARE TO LEWIS AND CLARK FAIR During the 1 ewis and Clark Exposi tion the Southern I 'at i tic Company will sell round trip tickets to Portland, limit thirty days, at one mi one-third fare for the round trip. In prosecuting his search for ancient and peculiar weapons, Mr. Wright has ! forsaken the paths of conventional relic- j seekers and sought out a way of his own. Hudson's bay tomahawk pipe. There is a Cuban machete that was picked up at San Jauan hill August 15, 1898, by an American volunteer. There ia a bead hunter's axe from tbe Philippine islands, and tbe famous wavy blade poison kris. Tbe collection includes an Italian Mafia knife, double-edged, that was made to be held in the hand like a cork-acre w. In the collection are weapons of every conceivable shape and make. There is a pair ot tiny revolvers leas than two inches in length and a quarter of an ounce in weight, while there are also huge ancient weapons that in size ot projectiles exceed many modern cannons. A detailed account of each of the 165 i peculiar weapons forming tbe collection would be impossible. One of tbe queer est, and from the standpoint of histori cal interest, one of the moat valuable is an Arabian blunderbuss, with a fliut lock and very old. It ia still in fine con dition and has a barrel well suited for booting rocks aa well aa bullets. In deed almost any projectile could easily be put in the barrel. Another blunderbuss in the collection is an English brass-barrel. pistol. There is a bayonet attached which folds under tbe barrel and when released by pulling tbe trigger-guard ia thrown into posi tion by a spring. As nearly aa can be acertained this pistol is over 160 years old. There ia another Arabian weapon in tbe collection that undoubtedly has an interesting history. It is of the pattern shown in the famous paintings of the "Slave Market." Tbe handle ia of in laid silver which at one time was covered with valuable jewels. There is also an English oval, or bell- muzzle, pistol of the blunderbuss It also has a bayonet folding under tbe barrel. Belgium is repre sented in the collection by a pocket knife cap-aiid ball pistol. It ia a freak in any collection and likely baa few duplicates in the world. The barrel is on the back of the knife, while there is a cork screw for a trigger. The knife blade attached ia over four inches in length. t here is an English flint-lock pistol that was brought from Scotland and presented to Mr. Wright for bis collec tion by Mr. Robert Livingston. Tbe pistol is very old. It ia double-barreled and one hammer flies both barrels either together or separately, aa desired. What is known aa tbe "understriker" is a novelty in pistols. It has a ham mer underneath the baarel, arranged so that there will be no abstraction to tbe view in sighting along the barrel. An other novelty is an old English revolver that has a hole in the hammer through which to eight. It is finely engraved, and in its day must have been an ex pensive weapon. A pair of dueling pistols in the collec tion waa made in Tyrol Swiiierland. A double-barrel dagger pistol ia said to have been tbe means by which a man was killed, for which tbe murderer waa hanged. A peculiar specium is what is called the "knuckle pistol " It is 22-calibre and bolda six cartridges in its roam her. lesides its use aa a revolver k can also be used aa braes knocks.
