z The Education of the Child By LORENZO D. HARVEY. Superintendent of Schools. Menomonee. WU. HE education of the child has for its purpose his develop ment through environment largely, but through environ ment AS SHAPED AND MOLDED BY THE DE MANDS OF SOCIETY. Iifa large measure education is a MODIFICATION of environment, and this modification is brought about by influences external to the child being educated. Our entire school system is modification of the NATURAL environ ment of the child, coming not solely or even largely from a study of his activities, but from the experience and judgment of society as to his future needs as a member of that society. Keeping in mind that for which the child is to be prepared, not in any given industry, BUT AS A USEFUL ICEltBEE OF SOCIETY, as fixing the aim and what he is prepared for NOW, as determining what is to be done todav of the things which are essential to be done for the working out of the aim of education, it follows that, if the industries are to find a place in the training of the child, then his present activities at any staire do not furnish a proper basis for the determination of what industries are to be employed, but WHAT shall be employed NOW, emd HOW they shall be employed. THE DIFFERENT SUBJECTS WHICH FIND A PLACE IN THE ELEMENTARY COURSE OF STUDY ARE THERE BECAUSE OF THEIR NEED IN THE PROPER DEVELOPMENT OF THE CHILD FOR THE ACTIVITIES OF LIFE. WHETHER ANY SUBJECT SHALL FIND A PLACE IN THE ELEMENTARY COURSE OF EDUCATION OR NOT IS DETERMINED BY ITS UTILITY VALUE AND ITS TRAINING VALUE. ROSEBURG THEATER Monday April 3rd THAT ROARING FARCE COMEIIV "CAPTAIN RACKET" BI-NliFIT R05EBURG ORCHESTRA I History's Lesson Lost Upon Russian Nobility By Rev. NEWELL DWICHT HILUS of Brooklyn RUSSIA has neglected the lesson of freedom so eloquently taught by history. A new statement of OUR lesson is to be found in con nection with that great empire of Europe which now is dis turbed with the preliminary tremblings of A SOCIAL EARTH QUAKE. Three hundred yean ago the conditions which prevail in Russia today could be found in England. Later, in France, a noble, when the poor people of Paris asked for bread, said, "Let them eat grass," AND THE NEXT DAY THEY BUTCHERED HIM IN THE STREETS. TODAY WE FIND IN RUSSIA A NATION WHERE THE LIVES OF THE LOWER CLASSES ARE FILLED WITH MISERY AND SQUALOR. In the warm, rich atmosphere of the twentieth century these con ditions exist One part of society arrayed against the lower classes is saving, "We will be blind to the teachings of history," and is ignoring the INEVITABLE CONSEQUENCES which follow the enslaving of human souls and bodies. A little handful of men own all the land, possess all the titles, hold all the privileges. This is a countrv of which it can be trulv said. "THE LESSONS OF HIS TORY HAVE BEEN IN VAIN, lessen is upon them. About Rheumatism There are few diseases that inflict more torture than rheumatism and there ie probably bo disease tor which such a varied and useless lot of remedies have been suggested. To say that it can be cured is, therefore, a bold statement to make, but Chamberlain's Pain Balm, which enjoys an extensive sale, has met Notice of Restoration of Public Lands to Set tlement and Entry. : pvKI'ART.MKNT ok THIS INTERIOR, Uea .
