Three men were arraigned on crimi nal charges before Judge Hamilton the crcuit court Saturday. Fugene Torres, colored, who took a shot at Po liceman J. W. Dent on the night of October 22nd, last, entered a plea of not guilty on a charge of assault with a dan gerous weapon. His trial wap set for this morning. A. W. Hussey, the tran sient tailor, who is alleged to have stolen money from the cash register inA.T Thompson's saloon at Myrtle Creek, and C. H. Peherson, the transient farm hand, who stole a horse from John Weaver, near Myrtle Creek, were given until today to plead, the former on the charge of burglary and the latter lar ceuy. Attorney A. ..urcim was n- tained to represent Hussey and Attor ney Louis Barzee will perform similar services for Torres and Peherson. In the Justice Court at Myrtle Creek, Pe- ' hereon pleaded guilty on the charge of horse stealing, but the plea is invalid i because the justice had no jurisdiction in the case, other than preliminary ex- animation to determine if there was sufficient evidence to hold Peherson for appearance before the circuit court. Only one civil case was acted on Sat urday, that of Mary S. Wilson vs Wat son W. Wilson, a suit for divorce. Judge Hamilton granted a decree of separation and then adjourned court until 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Jndge Wm Galloway, of McMinnville, opened the regular term of court this morning in place of Judge Hamilton who was obliged to attend a meeting of the Board of Regents of the State University to be held in Portland. Judge Hamil ton will return in a few days and relieve Judge Galloway. PLAINOEALER OREGON TOBACCO LAW W. C. T. U. Proposes to Have Its Provisions Entered. Ptmtn, Dec 7. Which lapsing water ever lave. And soft and clear her light was thrown Upon each swiftly moving Brave. With eagle plume? and war-paint on. And rugged features stern and grave. They leave behind the canyon drear : Light breezes fan each heated brow. When, lo, they check their wild career, And listen, closely listen, now. Sweet as the melody one hears Breathed softly in a lulling dream, A strain of music to their ears Is gently wafted down the stream. Now, on they glide; o'er waters clear The music comes to them no more. Again they pause. They faintly hear The sound of voices on the shore, Then thro' the fir trees tall and grand. The gleaming of a fire they sea ; They quickly turn and row to land, Kach with his rifle on his knee. As clouds pass o'er the moon's bright beam, They creep thro' grasses wet with dew I'ntil a wagon and a team, And people round a fire they view. The man, his wife and children dear Sit near their tent of canvas thin: One fair young girl with golden hair, Holds in her hands a violin. The pitchy knots burn clear and bright, Ami fast the blazes upward run. At father, mother in the light, Kach warrior points his deadly gnn. Then takes fine aim with eyes aglow, As thirst for blood pervades hit heart. Just as the maiden draws h"r Ixiw Across the strings with skilful ait. A tender, deep and moving strain, A strain that soothe and briags re lease. Floats far away upon the plain, And leaves with all sweet rest and peace. As holy light of genius bright Illumes her face refined and fair, Inspired with music's matchless might, With perfect touch she plays each air Now, standing from the rest apart, Where gleams the firelight on the trees, The sacred longings of her heart She pours thro' music on the breeze. The warriors gaze with soft'ning eyes. And on the ground their rifles lay : Ixing, long they listen, then arise, And in the darknea? ptl away.
