Gleaned by an Able Corps Oakland News Notes. Miss Oeoil Slianibrook, of Portland, is greeting Oakland friends. A son was lorn to Mr. and Mrs. A. 15. tirublte, Tuesday evening. Mrs. Edyth Kelly, of Koseburg, was calling on Oakland relatives and frivnds Friday. H. F. leardorff and George McCoU lock have leased aud taken charge of the Collins livery stable. Ike and Forest Jones, of Red Hill, were in the city Wednesday. They brought in two hogs that weighed 500 each, on foot. Oakland p. nil try dealers w'll not ki 1 urkeys and other kinds of poultry in the city this se.-tson. The birds will be dressed by the local farmers and brought to town readv for the market. McCollum ft Wilbur's sash and door factory at McCollum's mill on Hinkle Creek is practically completed. The main building is M feet wide and SO feet long. Both the sawmill and factory will soon be running full blast. Mrs. J. P. Crouch has grown a lemon 10 inches in circumference, on a tree a I 1 i trine over a year old. This tree is not 1 exactly a house plant ; it grew out of doois most of the time. Neither is . Douglas a lemon-growint; county. We publish this article to show Southern Oregon has a delightful climate Maple Jones and Harold Hunt were the guests of County Clerk Zopher Agee from Friday evening till Sunday m .ru ing. The three "little fellows" enjoyed a very pleasant visit together. Zopher is quite a schemer. He sent Maple Jones home wearing a P.trker button. Ijtying all jokes aside, our county clerk is BBUfteOQS to loth the age-l and the young, and last, but not least, the ladies. Wednesdav evening at the residence of the bri.le s parents in this city, Miss Maude E (irubbeanl W. H. Hilton, Jr . were united in marriage by Rev. J. W. Stockton. Accompanied by Mrs A. V. Johnson, the happy couple started to North Bend on the midnight train, Mr. Hilton holding a desirable position tn that city. A few intimate friends were present and refreshments were served by Mr. and Mrs. (irubbe. May this worthy couple live a long anil happy life. PROBING ALLEGED TIMBER FRAIDS The land department officials, and there were plenty of them in this city, have been vigorously examining wit nesses, both in public and private, in an attempt to get to the bottom of the land department's so-called frauds. Every day some of the officials, in com pany with one or more locators, were seen driving into the conntrv, supposed ly on official business. Almost every locater in this city has been examined by A. R. (reeen or some of his subordi nates, and it was intimated that there were promisee of good pay and protec tion, for the supposed culprits if they would only "squeal." When promises failed, it is said, threats of immediate arrest and conviction were promised instead. The local land office stenographers were also placed in Mr. Green's sweat box and under went a rigid cross-questioning. Not only one but several days are spent under the withering gaze of the official. Hut all promises, threats and bull dozing seems to have beem unavailing to Mr. (ireen, who in his desperation to make some kind of a showing of "frauds" in Southern Oregon is grasp ing at every straw. LOADED WITH LUCRE AND BOOZE The Glendale News says: City Mar shal Jones arrested on Friday night an inoffensive stranger who was laboring under an overdose of Irish agitation of the "periodical" vintage, the attack having been on for several days. Upon searching his prisoner in the sanctum of the bastile the officer relieved him of 352 80 a fairly good snm for s citizen to tote when he couldn't tell whether Kchool was in session or vacation was in order. Lewis Buying More Mines. K. A. Jones sold on Monday to John C. Lewis nine claims on both sides of Rogue river at the mouth of Whiskey creek. They form the Royal Rogue group and are rich in copper, nickel and gold. Mr. Lewis is acquiring title to many of the most valuable mines in this section and it is safe to state that he will take many dollars therefrom for each one he puts into them.
