A large audience listened to the gold
medal declamation contest betwet n the
pupil- of the Rosehurg pithlic schools
Tuesday evening at the Hosebnrg the
ater. All participants acquitted tliem-
selves with credit. These three, who
according to the decisions of the judges,
carried off first honors, were as follows:
Primary division, comprising 1st, 2nd
and 3rd grades six contestants Dale
Griffith, of the 1st grade ; poem, "The
Runaway Boy".
Intermediase division, comprising the
4th, 5th and 6th grades five contest
ants Helen Cardwell, of the 5th grade;
poem, "That Grumbling Old Woman."
Advanced division, comprising the
7th, 8th, 9th and 10th grades four con
testants Lilith Moore, of the 10th
grade; poem, "Biddy's Trials Among
the Yankees".
The judges selected were Supt. F. B.
Hamlin, Mrs. S. C. Flint and Mrs. J. W.
Hamilton! The medals were presented
, by B. W. Strong.
The net proceeds from the admission
funds will be devoted to the expenses of
the Roseburg High School Athletic
Club.

give a rose festival in the opera house
late in May or early in June, the date

Boewell Springs has returned from San
Francisco where he has been spending

went to Frisco to avoid the rains but
