Friday night, the fraternal orders of which he was a member taking charge of tho body and removed tho remains to his former home., The funeral services were held Satur-. day afternoon at tho ISaptist church, Rev. S. A. Douglas conducting the services. The K. P's., B. P. 0. E's., W. 0. W's., tho United Artisans and tho city council each attended tho fun oral services in a body. Many of the business places of the city were closed to- business, as tho procession passed, and a large crowd followed, showing the high esteem in which tho deceased was held by his fel low citizens. Furthor particulars show tlint ho com mitted suicido by shooting himself in tho temple, his body not being found until the next morning, when members of the household went to call him for breakfast. Bridges of tho Southern Pacific Com pany on the lino between Portland and San Francisco are being thoroughly overhauled. Wooden structu res are bo ing replaced with modern steel bridges aud tho smaller culvorts, where wooden bridges formerly crossed, are being filled in with earth and rock. Tho cost of those improvements is very heavy. John D. Isaacs and party, head of tho bridge engineering department ot tho Southern Pacific are in Portland on an inspecting Uip noil'i from Son Francis co. Mr. Itiuca has inajjeSTod nil tho bridges on tlio lino in- the course of re construction, and states that tho com pany's bridges will soon equal tho best, "Steel is tho only stuff which con bo used theso modern days," said Mr. Isaacs, "and tho Southorn Pacific is put ting in tho best that can bo had." Tho lino is also laying now 00 pound rails on tho road between Portland and San Francisco. Tho light rails have been replaced almost wholly in California, and tho work will go on in Oregon.
