Attorney-General A. M. Crawford,
wife and son spent a few days at this
place this week, the guests of Attorney

Messrs. Crawford and Medley visited
the Bohemia mining district on business
returning Tuesday, and they expressed
themselves with being most favorably
impressed with the development in the
camp and the extensive improvements

fairs, but it was unanimously conceded
by the guests that they had 'never been
more delightfully entertained than up
on this occasion.
The Roseburg W. C. T. U. meeting
was held last Friday afternoon in the
homo of Mrs. S. Parks. The meeting
was opened in duo form by the president
Mrs A. C. Mnrstera who afterward con
ducted a short parlimentary drill. Fob

Considerable excitement was occasion
ed on the streets at noon today, when a
prisioner charged with drunkenees and
vagrancy, whom Marshal Jarvis had put
to work on the streets, made a break
for liberty. He was soon run down in
the brush by the river and brought back
to the corner of Oak and Jackson streets
where the ball and chain was attached
to his ankle. He, however, insisted
that he did not belong to the working
class, and presistently refused to in
fring upon their rights. For an
hour he stood with hands in pock
ets, in the middle of the street, a
gentle drizzle damiening his ardor to
the extent that he finally consented to
go to work. Shortly after, he made an
other and succehsful break for freedom,
and Marshal Jarvis took the hall and
chain only back to jail.

made at the Bryan home in Lincoln,

movement, and 200,000 Knights from

in Chicago, tho outrage at Beirut and
Adrianople have revived the spirit that
led to the formation of tho order eight
centuries ago. At the convention at

The Second Southern Oregon District
Agricultural Fair.
The fair will open at Eugene on Tues
day, Sept. 29, and tho Southern Pacific
railroad has offered a rate of one and
one-third fare for the round trip from
all points on the line in Oregon.
There will be the best display of agri
cultural products-and livestock ever ex
hibited in Western Oregon, as the rail
road has offered free transportation of
such to tho fair.
Tho prizes have been doubled this
.fear over last, as the Slate made an ap
propriation of f 1,800, the last year's ap
propriation being only $900.
The next fair will undoubtedly be
held at Roseburg and the citizens of
Douglas connty should make a point
to attend the fair at Eugene and help
make it a grand success and then we
can expect Lane county to return the
compliment next year.
