Beware of the Japanese. Bishop Libert, of Honolulu, timely warning of the increase ot immigration to the Pacific qives which is well worth considering, at least. The little brown men are becom-1 ; ot, imnnrtant factor in the labor of ! the Coast and a serious problem may be o rvrMonted bv them in a few years. In . 0f an interview at Los; Angeies ishuji Libert says: "If the Pacific Coast does not take care she will find herself over run with an Asiatic population that will be hard to overcome and that may do the state inestimable, harm." He con Hp -s the nresent emicration to the Sandwich Islands something to i be feared. "The Japs are pouring in there by every steamer," he said, "and I have figures which show that the Asiatic population of the islands already exceeds 60,000. In 1S9G the population nnmbeied 109,000, of which 24,407 were Japanese and 2l,G16 Chinese. In seven years the Asiatic - population has in creased fully one-third. What will be come of the islands if this condition of affairs is allowed to so on is dififcult to predict "The ill effects are already i wtiiiB th T'nitwl Staies is enjoving prosperity to the full- ' est extent, Honolulu is experiencing a depression that is felt bv rich and poor ti. i. lo.i,- ., to the Japanese, who have taken t, ni5ir nf white men in iA.. . eerv traHooTwnt laundry won.. 1 there ! are enough Chinese to attend to that branch of industry. Th Japs will work for almost nothing and for tnat reason they are in demand by the sugar plant ers. The Japs spend little or none of their earnings in the islands. They either save their money until they get enough to go back to their native coun try or else they send it back there to their beople." So rank is the growth of all kinds of vegetation throughout South Dakota this season that disastrous prairie fires ! will result this tall, unless extraordi nary precautions are taken. The first fire of this character this season oc curred near Blunt, and was caused by the apparently trivial act of a fanner while engaged in haying lighting his pipe and throwing the match upon the dry grass. Aided by a fietce wind, the flames covered an area of nine miles long and two miles wide before they were extinguished by the scores of men nd boys who were compelled to get cut And fight the fire. Hay and other prop-i rtr worth many thousands of dollars was destroyed as the result of the match being thrown upon the ground. H. F. Hollow, of Marble Falls, Texas, has submitted to the boll weevil com mittee, appointed by Gov. Lanham, of that state, what he claims, by nearly thirty years of actual trial, to have proved to be an entirely effective means of exterminating the insects. He is util izing it in his own extensive fields and is succeeding admirably. His device consists of a fiat pan, with a lamp in the center, elevated just above the surface -and fed by kerosene. He covers the pan's bottom with water, then covers the water with a tlun film of kerosene and sets it out in the cotton patch. He has a number of these scattered over the patch and he lights them every night. He catches decidedly more than a bushel of bugs each night. He says there are not enough birds in Texas to do all season the work one lamp does in a single night. The committee has of fered a purseof $50,000 to any one who can devise a satisfactory and ejections extermination for the boll weevil, the greatest pest known to the cotton grow ers.
