    3ow York's Automobile Law.
The automobile bill passed by the
New York legislature at its recent ses
sion has received the signature of Gov
ernor Odell and is now a law. While
most of the owners of racing machines
inveigh against the new law, the ma
jority of those who use the automo
bile for pleasure or business purposes
agree that it is a good and necessary
measure.
Perhaps some of the provisions ol
the lawfre stringent, but it Is neces
sary that the safety of the public on
public highways shall be guarded, no
matter how stringent the needed law.
There is an especially emphatic pro
test from the drivers of "red devils"
and "white terrors" against the sec
tion which provides that machines
must not traverse a dam or causeway
less than twenty feet wide at a faster
rate than four miles an hour. These
gentlemen must certainly have noticed
signs on bridges throughout the coun
try forbidding the driving of horses at
a pace faster than a walk. How, then,
in reason can they expect to be permit
ted to dash across these structures at
high speed on heavy, pounding ma
chines? Other parts of the law are vigorous
ly objected to by the racers among au
tomobilists, but their protests will go
for naught, as the public will back up
a law which recognizes the rights oi
the millions as against the wild pleas
ures of a very fsw. There are excla
mations of horror at the thought of im
prisonment for repeated violations ot
the law. The way for the fashionable
young men who fear such shocking
treatment at the hands of the authori
ties is to obey the law.
Other commonwealths where reck
less automobile speeding has become
a menace to public safety would do
well to follow the example of New
York's legislature and governor.

well suited to the broad characters of
