    POPULAR NORTH BEACH.
Roseburg People Will Find This
an Ideal Recreation Resort.
Many Roseburg people have decided '
to spend their vacation atPopularNorth i
Beach, at the mouth ot the Columbia J

Popular bUcclioti ot senators.
It looks very much as if the next
great change in our political machin
ery would be in the method of choos
ing United States senators. Already
twenty-one of the forty-five states in
the Union have adopted resolutions
asking congress to submit an amend
ment for the direct election of senators
or to call a convention to submit such
! au amendment Fourteen states tove
' refused to take action in the premises.
j and ten states have given no consider-
ation to the subject.
It will require favoraWe action by
1 two-thirds of the states, nine in addi
tion to those which have already tak-
! en action, to bring about the submis
sion of the amendment by either meth-
. od. and it la net improbable that the
i necessary number will be obtained
' within the next two years. It is
among the probabilities that some of
the states now hostile will become
converts to the direct election system.

Attention Is called to the fact that
rivalry may arise between New Or
leans and Paris for the honor of being
the birthplace of Paul du Challlu. the
explorer and author who recently uieu.
The English publication devoted to bi
ographies of Hviug personages, styled
Who's Who." accredits him to tlie
French orbital, while the American
annual of the same name asserts that
New Orleans was the scene of his first
appearance. It would seem to be de
sirable that the two publishers of
"Who's Who" should get together and
C-.'d out "wlnt's what."
