Life Restored by Salt ft;-"' it f S3T The injection of a saline solution is reported from the Memorial hospital, Brooklyn, to have brought back to life a child who was really dead. Vera Clark. 11 years old. of No. 1133 Ber gen street, Brooklyn, had bathed in the surf excessively, and several! weeks ago she complained of pains in her abdoman. Dr. Herman E. Street was called in, and he pronounced the case one of appendicitis and advised j immediate operation. The parents would not consent, and for several days the child was permitted to suffer, i her condition becoming worse. Final- j ly the parents consented to an opera- j tion, and Dr. John Hubbell Schall was J called in. Dr. Schall said the child's condition was too serious and refused -to operate. Vera was sent to the Memorial hos pital, and on July 14 Dr. Schall con sented to operate, after telling the parants that without the operation the child must certainly die, and if the operation were performed there would not be one chance in a hundred of her sun-iving the shock. Assisted by Dr. Street, Dr. Walter Isard and Dr. Weigie, Dr. Schall ap plied the knife, removed the appen dix and a tumor as large as a man s fist, which had grown on it, and 5 in ches of the 'intestines. The ; patient then collapsed. She no longer breathed. The heart had ceased to "beat. Her limbs grew oold. All the doctors beclared her dead. In a moment of inspiration Dr. Schell called for a salt solution. With this he washed the intestines and the ab dominal cavity, sewed up the incisions and then injected a quantity of the solution into-the veins. Slowly, but surely, life returned. The spark was small the first day. It increased and was watched day and night, increas ing all the time." Today the child is one of the happiest patients in the hospital, surrounded with her toys and on the high road to recovery, having less than two weeks ago been declared dead.
