The Greenback Aline. (By Oar Special Correspondent.) How many people in Southwest Ore gon ever heard of "the Greenback mine?" How many of those who have heard of "the Greenback" know any thing of its magnitude and value? 7not nvi.r tlm linn luihrwn TVui.Tlta oI Myrtle Point, anility ot Coos, stito o Just oer tne lino iwtwcen uougias Ron hM thIs jB5. flled , lnU oHlco nIs and Josephine counties, on a high, rug' ced mountain side, is tho second town of Josephine county. There, continu ously, day and night, week in and week out, thirty ponderous stamps are falling in two quartz mills, stamping out the gold from the "Greenback" ore. The Bound of the falling stamps and the roaring noise from the mills is distinctly heard for several miles down the canyon Back in the mountains, amid the wildest scenery imaginable, among the everlasting, rock-ribbed hills, Nature Bought to hide her treasure where the big fissure occurred in the serpentine belt. There the fir trees grew tall and dense, almost shutting out the light of day, and she stored the rich, gold ore, fit for a monarch's crown, trusting it was secure from the avaricious eyes of man. And from the average man it was as secure as a buried in the very center of the ocean. But there is a class Notice for Publication. Unite! There are the prospectors, who, with pick and blanket, will trav' erse the "Death Valley of Arizona," tne Bavage-imested jungles ot Africa or the bleak and froren snow fields of Alas ka, in search of nature's depository, From such men her storehouses of wealth are safe nowhere. Five years ago the Greenback mine was a prospect hole. Today the mountain is honey combed with tnnnels. There are nine Qnnels on the main vein ; one above the other, at varying heights, and all connected witn ore entiles, eo mat it is possible to enter the lower tunnel and come ont on the opposite side of the mountain, after climbing a ladder about 600 feet high, from the lower tunnel to one of those above. The Greenback is probably the best developed and most extensively worked mine in Oregon. There is 8000 feet of tunnels, about one- fourth that distance in "uprises" and "cross cuts," all on the main vein There are two main tunnels, or. rather, openings to the interior works, each with a quartz mill at the month, crush ing the ore as fast as it is produced from the mine. Car tracks are laid through all the working tunnels, and all the ore, as fast as mined, is run out on cars to the mills. At the upper mill there is a battery of ten stamps, and at the lower mill, one of twenty stamps. Both mills are provided with concentrators, and a very large proportion of all sul phurets are saved. At the lower, or 20 stamp mill, there are in operation two "Wilfley Concentration Tables," the latest and most improved pattern Here is also a complete "cyanide plant' for the treatment of the tailings and ex tracting the small per cent of gold that escapes the plates and concentrating tables. The tailings thus treated are necessarily low grade, but the great amount of tailings handled, even at a , Email profit per ton, runs the total up to a considerable sum The pay roll at the mine is one hun dred and two men. WHISPERING TOO LOUD! i I have heaid it whispered in loud tones that I was going to W quit tho music business, but that is only another from the old $2 source for the purpose of gaining a point. Even if I succeed in my new enterprise, it will bo only another step towards holding my own against tho trusts and combines. I am aiout the only piano dealer now on the coast that is going it alone and single handed. I j?m grateful to the many friends who are giving me ' their patronage, for each month is bringing in greater results. I have never been guilty of selling a cheap piano for a high price or of misrepresenting the goods I handle, or even my competitor except in a defensive manner. And the name NEEDHAM (as he has no connection with that house) must be dropped from his ad. or he will hear something drop in regard to the price of Victor pianos that will surprise him and the public, or better see clipping from an eastern paper in my window, where Victors are offered for nearly two thirds less than is asked for them on this coast. This trick of holding a piano and keeping it in bad order just to knock its good qualities, is getting to be an old gag and the public certainly sees it or we would not continue to sell so many high grade Needham pianos. Do you remember not long ago, when a certain dealer got hold of a few Steinways and sold them for low prices just to hurt its reputation? Did it hurt it? No and neither can they hurt NEEDHAM because it speaks for itself. All our last sales are a choice between NEEDHAM and Chickering, NEEDHAM winning out every time. The whole property is lighted by the Company's own electric plant. The streets, buildings, tunnels and all, pre sent a very up-to-date appearance. The entire wagon road from Leland to the mines, a distance of about twelve miles, is practically maintained by the Green back company, and most of the road was built by them, at an enormous out lay of money and labor. One hundred thousand dollars would not cover the amount expended in the construction of roads, hauling and purchasing machin ery, transporting supplies and lumber, and putting the property on a paying basis. It requires a long purse and Eteady netve to open up a property such as the Greenback, bnt once the prelim inary work is done, the returns are more than commensurate with the expenditure. The ore (a sample of which may t seen at the Board of Trade) is high grade and very uniform in value. There is sufficient ore blocked out in the tnnnels to occupy the mills for several years without any farther development. The Greenback is easily the first mine in Southern Oregon, if not in the state, and "by far the greatest enterprise in West ern Oregon. The entire property is un der the management of C. W. Thompson, mining engineer and practical metallur gist. Mr. Thompson is ably assisted by F. M. Short as assistant superintendent. These gentlemen are "the men behind tneeuns. it is under tneir manage ment that the Greenback has grown and assumed the proportions of a mine. When they took charge of the property it consisted of a single tent and a GO foot prospect hole yet even then they could see in the future, the magnificent Green back of today. Too much credit cannot be given to the men who have made this splendid property what it is. They owe nothing to society. The wealth ac cumulated by them has not been wrest ed from their fellow men by barter, trade or schemes. They have spent years in the mountain solitudes blast ing wealth from the rocks, where trades men and those who live upon each other would not have spent a dollar. And that is not all society is measurably enriched by the constant stream of gold flowing from the Greenback, as a fountain head, into the channels of commerce. The wealth of Southern mines is being demonstrated, and there is only one present Greenback, there are many prospects with a better showing according to the amount of work done, than the Greenback had at the same period of its development "When mining men once become con vinced that Southern Oregon ledges "go down," this section will become one of the first gold producers in the world .
