INSECT PESTS AND DISEASES. FUNGOUS Some of the Principal Foes with Which Horticulturists Must Con tend, and the Appropriate Weapons. Spraying is effective according to the completeness with which the surfaces are covered with the -eprav mixture, ti MiVki nf M art'lant A TT-icn 1 tlirfll NJiJ Vi'V KJ'UiW V, .nilij .-(-,-- Society. All fspray mixtures will stick to the surface much better if applied as . . . , '. j .v - a tine mist tnan in coarse arops, ior uw drops easily run together and drip off. while the mist globules remain. It is what remains on the surface that is beneficial. Make the spray a fine mist and keep the nozzle moving. Do not soak the tree. Cover the leaf, Iruit or twigs with mist globules, but do not wash them with an overdose. Two light but thorough sprayings are more beneficial than one drenching, and re quire very little njore liquid and only little more time. Keep all trees free from dead and use less wood. When trimminsr, cut so as to leave the surface flush with the bark Projecting stubs never heal over, but become sources of trouble later. Paint all cut surfaces as soon as made ; they will heal better aDd resist decay much longer. If diseases or insects are serious do not wait, but spray promptly to main tain control. Insects are injurious either on account of the actual destruction of plant tis sues by the insects (borers, caterpillars. etc), with the consequent loss of plant substances ; or on accouut of the drain npon the vitality of the plant through the loss of sap (San Jose scale, etc.) ; or by the interference with root or leaf ac tivity by colonies of insects (root acd leaf lice). Each group of insects is con trolled by special methods. First Caterpillars and all leaf eating j insects. Spray with paris green or bor- j deaux pans green. Kepeat at frequent : intervals (seven to ten days) if neces- j sary to control. For asparagus beetle, add resin solution to paris green and spray as below. Second Corculio. Spray with arse nate of lead in spring. If serious later, catch adults by jarring insects from trees into a sheet beneath, and then de stroy. This should be done in early morning. Repeat at frequent intervals (daily, if necessary) to control the pest. Third Borers. The peach borer may be located by the holes close to or just below the surface of the soil. They may be killed in April or September by cut-. ting out with a knife or by running wire into the holes. In the case of the apple twig borer, the bored twigs should be cut out and destroyed during June. Other borers are controlled by similar . methods. use paris green mixed with air Elaked lime, flour or plaster (one part of the poison to twenty or thirty of the lime, flour or plaster), dusted on the foliage in the morning. Kepeat at Ehort intervals if necessary. Fifth Plant lice. For plant lice, use kerosene emulsion (15 per cent) as soon as noticed, repeating as may be nec essary to control. "Rose leaf" tobacco extract may be submitted, if desired especially in greenhouses (one part to sixty or seventy of water). Sixth Scale insects. Scale insects are .controlled by caustic solutions, so that it is often necessary to treat trees in a dormant condition for fear of in jury to growing parts. Lime, Eulphur and salt wash is recommended for dormant trees infected with San Jose scale. Whale oil soap (two pounds to the gallon of water) or 20 per cent kero sene may also be used. The last two apply to other scales as winter treat ments. Summer treatment for all scales 20 per cent kerosene emulsion applied on bright, sunny days. Seventh Red spider. To control red spider, avoid too great dryness ; when present spray the plants with water with considerable force. "JJicoteen" evaporated by hot irons helps to check this pest. When present on . open air plants, treat as for plant lice. Paris green may be used alone at the rate of one-quarters pound to the barrel of water for all leaf eating insects. Keep well stirred while spraying. Better results are often secured by combining the paris green with bordeaux, as the poison re ma Las more evenly distributed and adheres better when so applied. Fungous diseases are ' injurious either directly as a result of the destructive action of their juices and growth, as in the case of rots, or by the exhaustion of food mate rial es, etc., as in leaves infest el with mildews and le;.f ejKts;or by becoming the' means by which more destructive fungi may obtain a foothold, as is frequently the case which scab on apple. Fungi attacked all parts of the plant, but any one fungus . is ordinarily confined to a particular portion leaf, fruit or wood. First Knots. These are of two kinds twig and root knots. The first are usually the result of a trae fungus at tacking the tree, the root knots are often of animal origin (eel worms), but are also caused by a low order of plants, aa in peach root knot and crown pall. Crown gall is not a curable disease ; re moval of tree is the oi ly remedy when serious. Twig knots (black knot) may be largely controlled by pruning aided by spraying. Second Mildews and moulds. ( Many of the fungi belonging to these groups are injurious. They are - recognized by their "mildewy" or "mouldy" appear ance. Bordeaux controls these fungi by killing the growing parte jib well as the spores at germination. Third Rots. The group i6 easily rec ognized by its effect. A number of dif ferent fungi cause rots and are not con fined for their development to the growing or ripe fruit, but may attack twigs as well. Thorough spraying 'and clean orchards are necessary where rota are serious. Gather and destroy all de caying or mummy fruits. Fourth Rusts. The diseases of this group' are recognized by the brown (rnsty) powder usually present. The chief injury of this group is done to cereals and occasionally to apples and pears, especially if near cedar trees. Spraying with bordeaux and removal of cedar trees give control for fruits. Fifth Scab. Scab on apple, etc., is recognized by the dry, darkened patch of tissues killed by the fuDgu'ei. Other fungi often begin this injSry at these places. Spraying ordinarily con trols scab, if carefully done. Scab of po tatos and beets is a s il disease. Xew growth is recommended. Sixth Other diseases. Leaf s;.tt, leaf curl, fruit-t-p.eks and other miiie-i -able conditions or i. cisc-j i i c. serious, but the treatment for the other groups will apply to most of these. Bor deaux mixture is general mean9 of checking and coatr.illing all these troubles. Possible injury due to fungi may be avoided by preventing the germination of the spores of the fungus, or, in the case of mildews, bv the killing of the suriace crowth of the fungus. The con trol is obtained by spraying with bor deaux mixture, but this is rarely a cure, because, as it is applied to the surface only, it cannot kill the fungus growing within the tissues Bordeaux mixture is practically the only treatment for plant disease.
