r Th Prosperity of Kansas. The time was wben the name of the Sonqower State was associated with grasshoppers, cyclones and farm mortgages, but that was the old Kan Bag "bleedlQC," mortgage ridden San aa. There la now a new Kansas, the picture of which la graphically and sympathetically drawn by Charles Mo reau Earger In the Atlantic Monthly. It la usual to ascribe all the prosper ity that has come to Kansas to the good crops of the past few years. Good crops were, of course, an Impor tai factor, but Mr. Harger points out that much of the present prosperity la due to the thrift, economy and deter mination of the people. Those who went through the dark days from tbe bursting- of the "boom" in 1SS7 until the clouds lifted a decade later ac quired a hatredVof debt in every form. They made a tow that when the cred itors were aatlsfled Kansas would nev er again be mortgaged to the east. They have kept the tow, assisted, of course, by nature's bounty and the ex perience acquired in mastering the in tricate problems of western develop ment. In the fire years ending with the crop of 1901 Kansas raised 323,170,404 bush els of wheat and 6SL 452,900 bushels of corn. The average annual yield of wheat for ten years was 49,450,354 bushels and of corn 142.S5G.553 bush els, the average total value of both crocs being over $60,000,000. The av erage total product of farm and ranch for twenty years has been f 142,SG1,SS0 annually. In addition to these bumper crops the state has made a magnificent show ing In finances. It has paid off nearly all its mortgages, has built costly schools and other public buildings and has money in tbe bank. In December, 1K6, the state banks had on deposit 11453,000; in September. 1901, they bad $42,000,000, while tbe national banks bad $45,000,000 more. Kansas has many flourishing manu factories in her towns, but It is not the destiny of Kansas to be a manufactur ing state, eays Mr. Ilarger. Tbe Kan ssn wiS try no more to make farms of the short grass country nor to build a metropolis at every crossroads. After three decades of trial he will pin his faith to "mixed farming," to grazing, to cattle, horses, sheep, wheat and xnu let, alfalfa and corn, cows and soy beans, windmills and hay. otice for Publication.
