Last January the firm ol Brookes & Conner found it to the interest of this paper to discontinue the services of the Rev. F. S. Minshall and did so for prop er reasons, lnrebruaty we found it necessary to insert this notice : Notice. The Rev. Mr. Minshall ia no longer connected with this office nor is he authorized to receive subscriptions . or transact Irusiness in any manner for this paper.. 11. 11. Bbookks, Editor. Roseburg' Or. Feb. 25, 1903. The publication brought forth this reply: RosrBURa, Ore., March 2, 1903. Editok Plaixdkalsb, Data Sib: The last two issues of your parser have contained the notice, The Kev. Air. juinanaii is no longer authorised," etc. Now, Mr. Brookes, 1 have this mucn to say : I have been the means, through vou. of carrying a malicious lie all over Douglas county. I secured 335 sub scribers and persuaded a very large number of old subscribers to continue, on the strength of the authority that "tne rxAiKOKALSB snouia oe a m-wee-ly." This appears to me now to have been a deliberate fabrication to obtain influence and subscribers. I charge you with the violation of your contract with me, and fraud in deceiving the public. . This has worked irreparable injury to me among the citiaens ol Douglas conn ty and my only course now is to set my self right before the people in undoing the damaze that has been done. By the publication of this notice you have hedged the way toward my ever collecting or securing anything for my BervK.es except by law. 1 nave this day placed my account in the hands ef 1 attorney for collection. II this matter is not adjusted at once. 1 shall use every possible influence to do so myself and shall give the matter a thorough public ventilation. 1 ours Truly, F. S. MresHALL. We took no notice of the above letter and yesterday morning we received an other communication which we publish 7b the Hubcribert of Ou Rcteburg Plam- dtalsr. 1 herbv certify that between the dates of Oct. 7. 1902, and Feb. 25, 1903, I was duly authorised to collect and secure subscriptions lor the Koseburg i'lAi DBALBS. Full authority was . given me by the management to state that the paper would be better after the installation of the new Cottrell press and should be issued three times a week. Sufficient time baa now elapsed to convince me that management of the 1-xaixdialeh has no intention whatever of making this promise good. 1 want it distinctly understood that there was no falsification on my part but what I did was in lull faith and trust the public will exonorate me in this matter and place the blame where it belongs. Respectfully, X . . MIK8HA1X. h u beer 1 bed and sworn to belore me this 10th day of March, 1903. J . A. BGCHAXaX, Justice of the Peace. The above affidavit is false in this particular. The Kev. Mr. Minshall surrendered all accounts and papers in January, 1903, to the. partnership of Brookes & Conner, leaving a large dtficit to be paid to Brookes A Conner at some future date. The editor has not re newed the business with the gentleman and the cause for the publication of the notice was due to the fact that he rep resented that he was still employed by this office ; and during our absence from the office at dinner time, he entered th office and took from our desk a receipt order book without our knowledge or consent. So far as the tri-weekly is concerned: It was our intention to issue three times a week and cut down the paper to seven colums. Last January, when Mr. Conner severed hi con nection with the office we found that until we thoroughly understood all the details of the business and were well ac quainted, that to publish the paper three times a week would not be a suc cess, and we know bur readers prefer to have two good papers each week instead of three of may-be indifferent quality. It is our intention, however, to follow out the original plan as soon as possible. Notice of GuarJian's Sale.
