Mr. and Mrs. Child will be greatly missed by their many friends, who wish that they might return at some future time to reside, as Mr. Child still retains his interests in the J. F. Barker Co. Mrs. Child w ill he especially missed by the members of the Mental Culture Club, of which she was the founder in lio. Andrew Loppin, an Irishman, who had been working on extra gang No. 3. Southern Pacific line, fell from the rail road bridge which crosses Doe creek, am! broke his neck. Tlie particulars in the case are, that he had been up to Roseburg, on Monday, and was going back to resume work with the gang, and as there was no wagon road between West Fork and Hendale, he was walk ing on the track, and as he was crossing the covered bridge over Doe creek, he fell through, falling about thirty feet, with the result stated ajwve. He was 57 years old, and had no relatives in this country, ami as there were no indi cations of foul play about the accident, no inqu-st was held. The remains were brought to Roseburg, on the S. P. north-bound local Wednesday even ing, and buried by the county. Citizens of Rosjlmrg will remember a man named Payne who was in Roseburg last October and created great interest at the county fair and in the city by the numerous performances of his feet. A dispatch from Butte, Montana, says : "One of the most unique methods of holding up that could possibly be im agined was perjiet rated shortly More 2 o'clock this morning, when C. Paynu, an armless man, entered the gambling hall of the California Club, and with a 44-calibrj revolver between his toes compiled the dealers at one of the faro tables to give up 5 which the crippled man had lost earlier in the evening. When Payne stepped into the middle of the room, and at the same time flour ished the weapon at the end of his foot, i gamblers and players scattered in a j hurry. Those w ho will debate are John Tow nsend, Tom Townsend, Voiney Dixon, Floyd Ramp, John Ferguson, Earl Strong and Emery Davidson. The judges are H. IL Brookes, Lewis Barzee and Father Doyle. The question is "Resolved, that it would be for tlie best interests of the ieop!e of tlie United States if the coal mines be owned aud operated ty the Government." This same subject will be debated by the Eugene club and the Roseburg club when they have their meet, Roseburg taking the affirmative. The three boys who make the best de bate tomorrow night will be selected to debate against the Eugene boys. Mahoney-Carroll Weddinjr. Mr. Arthur Mahoney and Mm Grace Carroll were married Wednesday even ing at the home of the bride's brother, W illiani Carroll. The cere mony was performed at 8 :30 o'clock by Rev Hyatt, of Oakland. The house was nicely decorated, aud in all the affair was very pretty. Quite a number of friends and relatives were present to witness the union.
