The Roseburg fire department were summoned by a fire alarm at seven o'clock Friday morning, but as the alarm was false the city was saved the expense of paying to have the carts hauled to the scene of action. On Sunday night the editor and family were complimented by a seren ade at their home in West Roseburg. The young men, about twenty in the partv, rendered instrumental selections and sang several popular Southern melo dies which were greatly appreciated, and the voune men have our sincere thanks. Mrs. R. B. Houston and children will leave on Wednesday for a few days in Salem, and will then spend a week with relatives in Eugene. Mrs. Houston will return here to arrange for the shipment of her household Roods to Salem, their future home. Johnson, of Myrtle Creek was a passenger on this morning's delayed overland for Portland. Volney Dixon left this city today for Oakland, where ho will visit friends and relatives for a few days. I. A large number of friends and acquaintances were in attendance. The pupils of the Roseburg High School attended in a body. Wiley Miller, of Looking Glass, was transacting business in Roeeburg, Satur day. He favored this office with a pleasunt call and likewise cash on sub scription. He says Saturday morning was the coldest of the winter and in his part of the county, the ground was frozen sufficient to bear np a horse. The Glendale Gun Club has organized with the following members enrolled: Chas. T. Nail, Wm. Chattansch ; E. . Red field ;0. P. Lane; . A. Wall; Ray Hill ; August Larsen ; A. G. Clarke ; W. H. Redneld. Some good scores were made last Sunday, Ed Red field carry ing off the honors. The club meets Sun day afternoon. Hon. W. B. Clark, the sage of Mill wood spent Saturday in Roseburg transacting business before the U. S land offiee. He remembered the Plais- dkai.eb with a pleasant call and stated that he had only recently returned from Salem where he has been an interested spectator of the legislative assembly. The ladies of the Presbyterian church of Roseburg, expect to hold a Rummage Sale and Bazaar the first week in apri and will be very grateful to anyone who will make donations to either of these departments. The Oregon Investment and Real Es tate Company have opened headquar ters in rooms one and two Taylor & Wilson building, and are conducting a general real estate and investment busi ness. Bridges left Saturday morning for Portland, ne was accom panied as far as Drain by his wife and two children who spent Sunday .with relatives at that place. Mrs. M. C. Jones, of Whatcom, Wash., is visiting her sifter, Mrs. A. Fields, of this city. This is ber first visit since she left sixteen years ago. It is announced that E. A. Rhoads, of Humbolut, Kansas, has purchased an in terest in the mill of the J. G. Flook & Co., of this city. Mr. Rhoads will arrive in this city early next month. J. J. Denner, of the Scranton Corres pondence School, left on this morning's local for Cottage Grove to look after business at that place. Hon. Geo. W. Riddle, of Azalea and Representative Willis Kramer were passengers oa to days delayed local for Salem. "The man from Mexico" drew a good house at the Roseburg theater Saturday night. The audience thoroughly en joyed the peculiar situations and inci dents of the play. The jail scene in the second act was made exceptional v funny by the introduction of the lock-step. Sykea of this city, Mr. Gurney states that his ter ritory has been cut and divided and that he has been assigned to Portland and Eastern Ordgon. Roseburg, Yoncalla, 488013.00 25550.00 5 m 6 " 14889 51 2443 07 127 75 LYNCH. At the home of J. M. Ritchey, near Aulauf, Feb. 6, 1903, Mrs. Permelia Lynch, aged 79 years, 1 month and 27 days. Permelia Lyle was born in Warren county, Missouri, Feb. 10, 1823, where she passed her early life. In 1800 she was married to Boone Frost, and re moved to Arkansas, where she endured the hardships of border warfare during our civil war. Matters finally became so serious that they were compelled to return to Missouri to save their lives. They came to Oregon in 1S05, and set tled in Linn county, where her husband died in February of the following year. In November, I860, she was married to James T. Lynch, who died March 15, 1891. They lived in Washington ten years before settling in this county. Five years ago she was taken to tho home of J. M. hitchcy where she received all the care and kindness that could l given her to make her last days happy. She leaves no relatives but a son-in-law, Chas.
