ROADS IN EUROPE. 1 Bow England nd Fruc Care . ( Thtlr Hlahwn. ' a 3 rH1an TtasAtfl 1 wo nunurca years uSx-us.auu tue worst roaas in me ivuiiu, ucwuuij the peasantry living on the roads -were, alone reo, uirelto .work them. InEpeakV ins of them Macaulay saysihatajxtute (Connecting' two great towns which have a large and flourishing J trade ;witi. each other should be maintained at the cost ot the rural population scattered between them is manifestly unjust. It was not until many toll bars had been violently pulled down. until the troops had In many instances been forced to act against the people end until much blood had been shed that a good system was Introduced. Every class now contributes to the maintenance of the road system Ot Encland. The French have probably the most efficient laws and regulations m tue srM for buildinsr and repairing of hisrhwavs, savs the Asphalt Journal. The minister of public works has the ceneral superintendence of all roads and ways by land and by water. There are four classes of road recognized by law namely. (1) national. C-) depart mental.- (3) military. (4) crossroads. Kational roads are built and kept up by the national treasury. Department- 1 a. ? :5 f it frHU A TTTICAX FEES'CH BOAS.. &1 roads are a charge upon the depart ments through which they pass, and part of the military roads are kept up by the government and a part by the departments through which the roads rass. The crossroads are kept up by the communes, though sometimes In thin ly populated regions these communes receive assistance from the govern ment, especially when these roads be come of importance. The national roads are paved like a street, bavin: an average width of fifty-two and a half feet The departmental roads are thirty-cine feet wide, and the military and -crossroads are of variable width. Tiles of broken stone are placed at convenient distances, and a man is constantly employed in repairing each section. ' l LEVEL CURVED ROADS. 'nam- ni"hiraT Sbeald Be Bnllt la BUlr Coaatrles. Straigbt roads are tbe proper kind to Lave, but la hilly countries tbelr straight:! ess should always be sacri ficed to obtain a level surface, so as to better accommodate tbe people .trbo use tbem, says Maurice O. Eldridge, assistant director public roads Inqui ries. Graceful and natural curves coii- forminz to the lay of the land add beauty to tbe landscape, besides en- bancing tbe value of property. JNot only do level curved roads add beauty to tbe landscape and make lands aloni tUern more valuable, but tbe horse Is "sijle to utilize Lis full strength over tbem. Furthermore a horse can pull only four-fifths as much on a grade of 2 feet in 100 feet, and this gradually lessons until with a grade of 10 feet In ICO feet be can draw but one-fourth as much as be can on a level road. Good roads should therefore wind aroc:;d lulls instead of running over them, and in many cases this can be done .without greatly increasing the Stance. Xo illustrate, if an apple or lear be cut iu half and one of the halves placed on a fiat surface, it will be seen that tbe horizontal distance around from stem to blossom is great er than tbe distance over between the same points. The willfulness of one or two private individuals sometimes becomes a bar rier to traffic and commerce. The great "drawback to the laying out of roads on the principle referred to is that of the necessity in some cases of building tbem through the best lands, the choicest pastures and orchards, in stead, as they do now, of cutting ircund the farm line or passing through old wornout fields or over rockv knolls. But if farmers wish peo- nle to know that they have good farms, ood cattle, sheep or horses, good grain, fruit cr vegetables, they should let tbe roads go thrpugn the best parts jf the farms. pnBcri Elacoas Good Rostda.' It is 22 encouraging sign of tbe times when fanners' Institutes and granges take up for discussion the matter of hitrbway improvement" Such a sign was manifest at Pomona, CaL, during tbe convention of the horticultural clubs, at which an afternoon's session was devcted to a discussion of tbe va rious phases of the subject Supervisor '? W. Ixnisden read a paper on "Oil ou Itoads,'' reciting the experience with oilins roads" in his county. The county nnvs SO cents & barrel for oil in Los Antreles. be said, heavy oil being bet ter than light After the roadbed is pre pared a strip twelve to eighteen feet v ide Is oiled, about three" times tbe first season, twice the cecond find in many cases once a year after that. From CO to 200 barrels are used per mile, according to soil and other con ditions. Tbe cost of oiling is about' $100 to f 150 per mile. J Little Ranch for Sale.
