DECEMBER 11, 191)2 The only reason given for the rash suicide of John Turner, a prominent citizen if Albany and the. trusted local agent of the Corrallis & Eastern . rail road, last Monday, was that he could not shake off tho demon drink. He struggled in the grasp of the habit without avail, and then gave op, de termining not to further disgraoe his wife and child. It is the same old story. i?ad, but little heeded by the hundreds who are drifting carelessly and thought lessly adown the same disastrous chan el. He told a friend not long ago t hat he had one of the nicest homes that could be found anywhere and that be was unworthy of it so long as be was slave to liquor. He bad often spoken to menus oi ins love lor bis wite anu daughter and bad once said be hoped to stop drinking and tieconte an honor to his familv. His attempt to leave liquor alone was a failure, and brooding upon bis failure led to temporary insani tv. He left both bis own and bis com pany's affairs in good condition. The Christmas holiday season is fast approaching, when turkeys and plum puddings, nuts, cider -and raisins and the children's stockings will all come in for careful attention. The selection guts lor eacn member ol the lamiiy re quires thought, and why not combine usefulness and beauty in making the choice. The selection of pretty house hold articles that are useful as well pretty gives pleasure to the entire fanv i'.y and in these days of thought and progress the combining of beauty with usefulness shows care and intelligence. A clearly defined Scheme of the trusts and their political friends to prevent President Roosevelt's nomination for the Presidency' in 1904 has become known. They are working for the nom ination of Senator Hanna-; or, if bis health should forbid, of Senator Fair banks, of Indiana. The trusts hope create an argument against Roosevelt by securing the defeat of any legislation to reeulate them, and then use the trust crv to nominate a trust candidate. The two large compound locomotives of the Atlantic tyje recently purchased by the Southern Pacific Company Jiave arrived at Oakland, Cal., and are the admiration of all the officials and em ployes. The locomotives are huge af fairs and tower away above their com panions in the rouna house. I hev are built at a manufacturing shop at Balti more, and are built to sustain a speed of ninety miles an hour for several hours. One has been assigned the number 273 and the other 277. Tracy dramas are as numerous in tbe East as was formerly theca.se with "Quo Vadis." If tbe epidemic does not die out, the Tracy plays will be as common as "Uncle Tom's Cabin" shows, and just as popular. While the exploits of this murderous bandit have already faded 4 rom the mind of the residents of Oregon and Washington, the man-bunt that hrilled the rnited States is still food for dramatists in the effete East. Subscriptions continue to pour into the Pi.aindeu.kr office and our list is growing at a rate never before, experi enced in the whole thirtv-fonr years of the paper's existence. Tbe Southern Pacific's intention to put heavier rails on tbe line in Southern Oregon, which was announced some time ago, will be carried out in the Spring. The new rails, which are to come from Antwerp in sailing vessels, will be of 80 pound steel. The 10,000 tens will lay about 76 miles of new track, and they will be put down be- twen Glendale and Dunsmuir. Already Admiral Dewey ' is hard! mentioned. He has bad his day. Now others have taken his place. Where is he. For the benefit of those who will always be interested in this splendid man it may be stated that be is in charge of a fleet at Culebra Island. The fleet cansists of four battleships, a cruis er, a gun boat and several other vessels of less importance. Great Britain and Germany have each sent an ultimatum to Venezuela in re gard to the wrongs done their suljct . After presenting the ultimatums, ,thei Ministers at Caracas went on board the Trarships of their respective nations Fleets of two powers are assembling off the Venezuelan coat in readiness to seize the custom houses and collect the sums demanded. Xo statement is mad on behalf of-Wneznela. John liarett, the new minister to Japan, is only 3t years of age. Eight years ago he was just a common news paper reporter in Portland. Mrs. Csrrie Xation has retnrned from -ew iorK to Kansas anu is airea.iy in jail in Topeka. She t-hould be com mitted to an intane asvlum. The San Francisco Cbro dele refers to Hon. H. The Catalogue Now Ready far Distrib utionLarge Exhibit Promised. Salem, Dec. 8. The new Oregon Code, compiled by Judge C. B. Bellinger and W.W. Cotton, was issued today. This code was authorized by the last legisla ture and hereafter will be used in the courts in the place of codes heretofore in use. One tiiousand copies ot the code will be delivered to the secretary of state and will be distributed by him. The new code is in two volumes and comprises 1S50 pages. The index is very full and complete, far surpassing any of the previous codes in this respect. The index references are to sections instead of to pages as in previous codes. Each section is followed by annotations refer ring to both tbe Oregon Reports and the Pacific Reporter. The general arrangement of the code is practically the same as Hill's Cod 2 of K2, so that the change to the new code will cause no inconvenience. One fea ture of the 1902 code that will be greatly appreciated is the black type line at the head of each section indicating the sul ject treated in the section. . This makes it much easier for one to find the law upon any subject. Besides tbe general laws of the state the code includes the Declaration of Independence, the United States and Oregon Constitutions, with index, the act of admission and all acts of congress relating to tbe State of Oregon. ' . To Improve tbe Road. Florence West: Milton Xicolie was in town Monday circulating a subscrip tion paper for the purpose of improving the county road between Mapleton and the mouth of Lake creek. Xearly all the business men on the river contributed liberally. It is under stood that the county court will appro priate from the county funds an amonnt equal to that raised by private subscrij tion. . A contract was let by the court a few days asro to Wm. Welia for opening a road around Rainbow rock. He re ceives $100 for the job, the county fur nishing the powder and tools. Catalogues of the Thin! Annual Poul-.j try Exhibition to be held in Roseburg Deo. 17-20 are now ready for distribu- I tion. If and want one, drop a card to the Secre tary and you will get it by return mail. Our show room in the new Douglas County Bank building is the unfit in town. This building was not built es pecially for our show, lait had it been, it could hardly have been improved upon. Many requests for catah-gucs and infor mation are coming from outside the county. Judge Cobbledick has written that be will attend the State Show in Portland, which is held this week, that he may le strictly up-to-date w hen be comes to place our awards. .
