probably temporarily insane, R, S. Davis

day set fire to the drug store of Mrs.
Sarah White bis competitor, returned
to his own etoe, set fire to it, and was
himself consumed in the flames. As
the result of this rash act five buildings
are now in ashes.
State Land Agent L. B, Geer has sold
all but 62 of the 240 farms he held on
hand two years ago.' Many of the sales
we e made in the last 12 months, since
the real estate activity became strong.
The farms were taken by the school

SECRETARY HAYS DAUGHTER WEDS.
Newt.uby. N. Hm Sept. 30. Yerx quietly aud in the
presence of only relatives and closest friends, Miss' Alict
lay, second daughter of Secretary of State John Hay, and
ames YV. Wadsworth, of Genesee, X. Y., were married to
day at the ''Fells," Lake Sunapee, the summer home of the
bride's father. Although all arrangements for the event
were made with the utmost privacy, the residents of thi
vicinity felt great interest iu it, a it is by far the most im
portant wedding that ever took place in this section. Few,
however, among 1 hem received invitations. In fact, the
number of guests was only 30.
The ceremony took place at 2 o'clock. The Rev. C.
L. Hayden, of Clevefand, who married Colonel and Mrs.
Hay, performing the ceremony today.
CHOLERA IX PHILIPPINES.
Manila, Sept. 30. It is understood that 5124 cases of
cholera and 2740 deaths from that disease were reported in
the Province of Ilo Ilo, Island of Pa nay, on Monday. This
is the highest record for any district since the outbreak
of the disease occurred, and exceeds the total of Mauiia
and many of the provinces since the commencemert. The
town of Miago in the Province of Ilo Ilo, was the worst suf
ferer, 1 1 73 cases being reported there Monday.
At Cabettaum there were S99 cases, and at Dumanges
xati cases were reported on Monday. The people are flee
ing to the mountains leaving the dead unburied and the
dying uncared for. The Government has ordered addition
al doctors and medicine to be sent to Ilo Ilo. The num
ber of victims makes ordinary sanitary measures impossi
ble. The total for all the provinces Monday was ?too
cases and 3091 deaths.
SCARCITY OF BIRDS.
Eugene, Oct. 1. The China pheasants were not
slaughtered today in huge quantities because they were
not in sight when tue mrnroas ana dogs stalked the fields.
It is very evident that the game law does not protect the
pay colored fowls. 1 he fields around Eugene echoed an
occasional shot today, however, and a few birds were
brought to town.

concerns throughout the country eugaged in the manufac
ture of toys, games and novelties, is to be joined by a large
manufacturing company of this city. The combination is
understood to involve a capitalization of from $7,000,000 to
$10,060,000.
