While there are at this time, many
office holders in Oregon, whose term
of office have already expired or
which will expire in the near future,
there is one class of officers, of whom
there are a number in Oregon, who
are not troubled themselves, neither
are they bothering their friends for
recommendations for re appointment
to the office they are so fortunate as
tohohL Postal Clerks, Postal In
spectors and Special Agents of the
general land office, and many others
holding like positions are not ap
pointed for any specific term of office
but hold their positijos until the oc
casion for their services no longer
exists, or they are removed for cause.
All forest reserve officers now belong
to this class. Hon. E. D. Stratford,
who was appointed Special Agent of
the General Land Office Jane 14th,
190Q, after he had completed certain
service in Alaska for which he held
s special appointment, and Hon. S.
C Bart rum, lately appointed Forest
Supervisor, both of this city, belong
to the fortunate class of office holders.
Next -Holiday, September L is
Labor Day. It is the only day in
the year which the great producing
classes can call their own. Wishing
to lift the burden for a brief moment
from the weary shoulder,' and to
make one pleasant spot each year
along the toiler's rugged path, the
Federal Government has set aside
September 1 as a national holiday.
For the first time in the history of
the commonwealth, the Governor of
Oregon has issued a proclamation re
questing that all places of business,
if possible, be closed in order to give
the employes everywhere within the
confines of the state an opportunity
to enjoy 2i hoursjn rest and recrea
tion. The old soldiers and sailors of
Southern Oregon will hold their an
nual reunion at Gold Hill, beginning
September 15tb, and lasting through
out the week. A number of promi
nent speakers will be present, among
whom will be Governor Geer, Rep
resentative Tongue, S. B. Ormsbv
and Col. IL V. Gates.
Great preparations are being
made for the annua! meeting of the
Southern Oregon Pioneer Association
to b hold at Jacksonville, September
4th. An excellent program is being
prepared and everything possible
will le done to make the meeting a
h success.

MORE STREET IflPROVEMENTS.
Property Owners Petition Council to
Allow them to Make and Pay for
Improvements.
The city council having refused to
grant and superintend the improvement
of Jackson street from Ifciinriax street to
the lecr Creek bridge after the proper! y
owners and others had subscribed the
rotiuircd amount of funds to defray the
expense of the work, the proerty own
ers as a last resort petitioned the Council
to allow them to make tho desired im
provement at their own exjiense and to
appoint a committee of three, compris
ing property owners on the street to lie
improved, t oversee the work". This
jietition the council dually "ranted
Monday and at tho same time appoint
ed the following committee, to lik
alter the work: Al Treason, I-red
Lough and W, C. Conner.' The im
provement consists of the plowing out
and opening of gutters, a till of from one
to two feet on which is to be placed a
good coating of gravel, covering a dis
tance of two blocks, Fred J. lilakely,
the street contractor, agreeing to com
plete the work in a gxxl workmanship
manner for about onehalf its real value
for the reason that it furnishes him a
convenient place to dejxvsit the dirt and
gravel taken from a rut in the street

owner of that part of town must he com
mended for their public-spirit and enter
