There is a very simple solution of
the whole trnst business. If yon
don't want trusts, don't vote with the
party of the trusts. Portland Jour

believe the only remedy for trusts is
Democracy and free trade. Anthra

with never a cent of Protection
and Democratic politicians con
tinue to flourish their argument to
'repeal the Tariff and smash the
trusts."' Nearly all of the Democrat

proper policy :s to make the Tariff

Oregon has entered upon an era of
railroad building that is most grati
fying. With a new transcontinental
railroad seeking an outlet at (kos
Bay, the Northern Pacific to spend
?3,OJ0,00' to bring its trains into
Portland from Vancouver, the Col
umbia Southern preparing to push
on into Southern Oregon, a new
road building into the rich Bohemia
mining district, and various other
rrilroad movements in various stages
of activity, it is beginning to lookjas
though the unsettled sections of the
state would soon begin to feel the
throb of industry and commerce.
A good roads convention, under
the direction of the Government, will
be held in Portland from Octoler 13
to 15. at which all the County
Judges, Counly Commissioners and
others interest es in good roads will
be invited. A special effjit will
ba made bv the Chamber of Com

the Northwest to have present at the
convention the Government train of
10 cars, containing economic road
building machinery.
Governor Geer has appointed
Henry E. Dosch as a commissioner
to represent the state of Oregon in
Japan and other Onenthl countries
in securing from those countries ex

position in 1.M)5. Mr. Dosch is also
appointed to take charge of any ex
hibits that may be sent from Oregon
to the exposition to be held in Osaka,
Japao, in I'M). The appointment
carries no salary with it.
It is a waste of time, money Bud
effort to conduct Democratic cam
paigns, to prepare and distribute
Democratic campaign literature, and
to send forth Democratic speakers
while W. J. Bryan roams about the
country demanding and receiving
consideration as a Democratic leader,
eays tbeDemocratic New York Times.
Some district Judge must have dis
pleased tbe editor of the Portland
Journal who 6aye: "Ignorance of
the law excuses no man. In other
words, every man is supposed to
know the law, except (be District
Judges for whom very wisely a
Supreme Court is provided to cor

W. P. Johnson, the promoter of
the big Myrtle Creek saw mill enter

of some of the people in blocking
his efforts to secure rights-of-way for

A few insist on him virtually buying
