Well-known Sea Captain Murdered
Botha Hay Succeed Kruger
Don't Want Fair's Money.
l'uRTi.AND, Aug. 2o. Captain J.J. Jacobsen, master of
the four-masted schooner Fred J Yood,ofSau Francisco was
cruelly murdered by his cabin boy, a Japanese named Tan
bara Gasaboro, while the vessel was on her way from Port-la-jd
to Tsintau, North China, with a cargo of lumber. S.
Oto, the lapaue.se cook, is charged with being an accessory
to the crime.
The murder occurred on the. high seas July 30. The
captain was stabbed with a big fnitcher kcife, aud fell dead
in a pool of blood on the deck, after a short struggle with
his assassin. Only the determined stand taken by Mate
Meyer prevented the crew from throwing the murderer into
the sea. The sad news reached this city last night by way
of Sau Francisco, to which port an account of the murder
was brought by the steamer Alameda from Honolulu. In
the Captain's cabin was Mrs. Jacobsen, the widow of the
captain, with their 5-monih-old baby in her arms, and a 21-inouth-olu
girl playing about her.

LoNiKx, Aug. 20. At the approaching meeting he

respondent of the Daily Mail, of an impending struggle for
supremacy between Generals Botha and Dewet.
The Hague, Aug. 20. The Boer generals, accompanied
by other prominent Boers, went to Utrecht today for a con
ference with President Kruger.

LOST GIRL
Epgenk, Aug. 19. Considerable exeitement was
rcnlt nf the announcement made Saturday bv Mr-
Mrs. John Mattauer, who reside near Bangs' Park that they
had lost their fair haired daughter, Marie, the day before.
A careful tracing search was instituted and the little girl
was fouud Sunday at the home of Louis Aya where she had
rone. She gave as the reason fo her absence from home
hat she did not want to take puui:hment which her parents
had promised her for some trifling offense.

Scranton, Fa., Aug. 19.
est Grossman, said to be nonunion workmen employed
about the Edgerton colliery, were shot from ambush today,
presumably by strikers. -Grossman was so badly injured
that it was necessary to amputate his right foot. Connelly s
condition is regarded as serious. The men were working
on a water course near the breaker.
PROPOSE A GIANT EXODUS.
Toledo, Ohio, Aug. 19. The Canadian government
has instructed its homesteadiug agent here to proceed to
the anthracite coal region and offer inducements to 30,000
or more strikers and their families to form a colony and
settle in Canada on land to be donated by the govern
ment. Work will be provided for the men until they have
prepared their laud for crops.

New York, Aug. 19. Society is stirred up over the
visit of the Duchess of Marlborugh. There is a general
