tive of the Associated Press today a high govirument offi
cial said thtre is undoubtedly very grave cause for anxiety.
i j His latest information from the palace was that the King
had successfully passed the chloroforming stage, but no
body couM say definitely for the next 24 hours how matters
would turn.
Lonhon, June 24. 5:05 p in. Sir Francis Knollyis an
nounced at 4:30 p. m. that there had practically been no
change since the operation. "His Majesty," he said, ''con
tinues to slet p well and is progressing satisfactorily. There
is no question, however, that the King's condition is ex
tremely critical.'"
Loniion, June 24. Immediately after recovering from
the operation, the King asked for the Prince of Wales, and
it was stated that a bulletin would be issued at 5:20 and a
final one at 10 p. rn. The fixing of those times was regard
ed as a good sign. The Premier, Lord Salisbury and other
members of the cabinet called at the palace' during the
day.

New York, June 24. Dr. Cyrus Edson explained the
King's illness and the operation as follows:
"Perityphlitis is inflamation, including the formation
of an abscess of the tissues around the vermiform appendix
hence perityphlitis is hard to distinguish at once from ap
pendicitis. Usually au operation is necessary to ascertain
whether the appendix or the surrounding tissue is diseased.
In the King's case there is probably an abscess at the head
of a large intestine where the appendix begins and the op
eration today was au immediate necessity because the ab
scess had to be got at at once and emptied of its contents
of pus. Of course I cannot say what further than the ab
scess was discovered by the surgeons that is, to Vbat ex-
