telegrams to h r. any one answering Wright's descrip

principal cities on the Pacific Coast.
The police are also looking for Charles Monte, another
e.-couvict whom they say was iu Salem a few days before
the break inquiring of one of the prisiou attendants if Tra

BANDIT TO MEET PANDIT.
Portland, June 20. Ward and Waiuwright, two of
the members of the fumous posse which captured Evans
raid ' Sou tag, the notorious California bandits, after eight
fierce battles resultiugiu the death of Sontag, have taken
the trctil of Tracey aud Merrill, aud they have ueither ex.
pectations nor desire to take the fugatives alive. They
arc daring men aud are simply after- the $3100 leward.
They will eudeavor to ambush or head off the convicts.
Some one will surely get hurt when these four desperate
dead shots meet. Ward and Wainwright are reformed ban
dits themselves.
A RUNNING MATE FOR ROOSEVELT.
Washington, June 20. As plans Uke shape iu re
gard to the Presidential campaign of 1904 more is heard of
the ruuuing mate for Roosevelt. Assuuiiug that the Hau
na boom will not prove formidable, aud that "Our Teddy"
will be the candidate again, the question naturally arises:
Who will have second place on the ticket? Iu this couuec-
tion Governor Vau Sant of Minnesota, who has waged a rc-
eutless warfare against the great railroad merger, is prom
inently mentioned, as it is well known, that the Governor
and President agree exactly politically. Senator Bevendge
of Indiana is also mentioned, and another idea which ap
peals to Roosevelt is to secure for his running mate some
strong mau from the Pacific Coast.
