A BRIEF REVIEW. There are reasons why.Mr. Furnish was not in himself a strong candidate for Governor. He is not a pobUc speaker, and there are persons who think little of the ability and worth of a candidate for public oflice in particular political office if he have not some kind of "gift of gab." Again, there are Republican, not a few, who wouldn't Tote for Furnish because he was formerly a Demo crat, and in their thinking no man of this description onght to be taken up as a Republican candidate, at least till all the old aud faithful ad herents of the party who have been supporting it since Lincoln's time i have had their turn at the Guberna torial office, says the Oregohisn. Bat the main cause that cut down his vote was the vengeance of de feated factionns. Bosses and their fol lowers, shelved by the primaries and conventions, wanted to "get even.'" Upon Famish, as the man who, in their view of it had snatched the scepter with an nnhneal hand, they concentrated all their wrath and lage. lie was the man through whom .they had lost control of the party: Lis name was the symbol of their defefit, and they resolved to "take it out of him." In this effort they were favored by the personal popularity of George Chamberlain- a man for who it was easy to per suade others to vote- llorever, "the avengers" used incessantly the argu ment that, inasmach as the remainder of the state ticket wonld be elected, with a Republican majority in the Legislature and the two Represen tatives in' Congress, the state wonld still be in the Republican line. All these condition were favorable to the factional conspiracy to sacrifice Furnish to the wrath of those whose la6t weapon was Inst of revenge. Loss of the Governor is unfortu nate for many reasons; but the sub stantial resnlts of the campaign have been saved. A strong Repnbli- J can majority in the Legislature is as sured; there will' be a Republican United States States Senator, and he will not be either Simon or Geer: Oregon's Republican representation in both IXouses of Congress is to be maintained; the City of Portland re mains in the Republicans hands, and George H. Williams is to be the May or, On the whole, considering the peril in which the party was placed by the formidable combination be tween a reveugeful and powerful faction 'and the Democratic party of the state, the result is more fortunate than many . had feared it might be Oregon still is a Republican state. It is ea.y to say that Furnish ought not to have been nominated. was Furuieh or Geer; and they who ! were resolved to shake Simon's Lold npoa the party and had won a com plete victory in the primaries of Multnomah and other counties were unwilling to give the Simon machine the advantage or opportunity of re habilitation. For Geer, supposing Simon would control Mnltnoraau, and therefore the state convention, was acting in concert with him; the organizatiou of the convention ia the interest of Geer wonld have carried with it control of the party organiza tion as well as the nomination of Geer, and this would have enabled Simon to maintain his hold on the party or large influence over it. Furnish wanted the nomination bnt was not - himself specially opposed to Geer, and the situation was such that if Furnish had not been nominated, Geer would Lave been. Then there wonld Lave been a contest on far ether grounds than those of the con test which ban ju6t been witnessed. The fight against Geer would have been very different from that which Furnish Lad to meet; it would have had exceedingly ugly features, and no one who has aa idea of what it would Lave been can suppose lLat Ger wouldhave fared in the result better than Furnish has done. All these things were considered by the convention, which, in the cir cumstances, preferred Furnish lo Ger. as it had s right to do, though tre;r aud some of hi supporters thought otherwise.- There was talk that Geer was '-entitled to it," and Gwr thought so himslf, no doob'; forgetting that he had not held that idH when Governor Lord wanted a reuvMiiuation. Lord fell in a contest between factions, just as Geer has fallen; but Lprd and his friends, though deeply disappointed, had the magnanimity to fall in and support Geer. these remark are made for the purpose of sbo'iug that there is an other side of I bis subject which it would be just as wtll to look at today while the subject is still recent, and before interest in it shall have been superseded by .other things or dulled by time. liOYKRNOK Ohaiuberlain Furnish, K. . Clackamas county which was ex pected to be cloise on the election gave Furnish a plirality of 31''.. due, doubllens, to the efforts of thai shrewd politician, George C.
