Portland, June 4. The entire Republican state tick et is elected, witn tne exception of . J. rurnisli tor gov ernor. It appears to be a defeat for him. It is but fair.! however, to say that the finals may even yet change the trend at present apparent. There are many returns yet to come from counties that may cut down the lead that is Chamberlain's at this time. The majorities of the remaining state candidates will be by such liberal margins as to make their races uninter esting. The fight was on the governorship. The in tidiest centered on that office. The movement of the pi.ite-.tini; Republicans was the thing that, added to the LaU r Unions, Portland strike aud the union of forces by the Democracy, gave Chamberlain the strength lie had. He was of course, if at all, elected by Republican votes. The returns that come iu so often mention only the governorship vote some of the local phases that the size f the majorities gained by the Republican state candidates are conceded to be j AMA- VAI.LKVV iri.l. Eugene V. Debs spoke in this city in Coliseum Hall at a meeting of more than 5,000 working men. The speech was intended to inaugurate the new trades union socialist political movement. Of the striking anthracite miners Mr. Debs said: "My advice to these men is to observe the law strictly and if they be shot down while walking on the public highway, which is guaranteed them under the law, then my advice is, shoot back. If the killing program is to be inaugurat ed, let it eftect the millionaire aud the mine owner, as well! as the miner." VOTE FOR GOVERNOR VERY CLOSE. Portland, June 4. Returns up to an early hour this morning indicates that Chamberlain's majoity, if he is elected at all, will be very small. He now leads by only 750 votes and five Eastern Oregon counties are yet to be heard from. Returns from all the counties are incomplete and it is possible, when the delayed returns are received the result may be changed. Mr. Furnish has taken renew ed courage and now expresses confidence that full returns will put him ahead. George II. Williams is elected mayor of Portland over Inman, by a handsome majority, over 1,000 at least. As to the couuty ticket the Republicans have made a clean sweep, with the possible exception of assessor, and in the city the Repub licans have elected everything except treasurer. Complete returns for the couuty and city will soon be in. The Republican state ticket with the exception of governor, will carry Multnomah county by a large majority and will show an increased vote throughout the state. DECEPTION.
