MAY TO-NIGHT AT THE Opera House FULTON, FURNISH, ACKERMAN, CRAWFORD Will speak upon the issues of the campaign from a Repub lican standpoint. Ever3body, irrespective of party affilia tions, cordially invited. A special invitation to the ladies MR. CHAMBERLAIN WOULD ABANDON THE PHILIPPINES Mr. Chamberlain, Democratic can didate of goyernor, in hia Iioaeborg speech said that the acquisition f,f j the Pnilippines had become an es tablished fact, but expressed the opinion, which corresponds with the scuttle" plank in the Democratic platform, that the archipelago sbonld be temporarily retained, bat its re lingushment should be soon. Thus, after all the hardships, expense and sacrifice of life attendant opon the acquisition and pacification of these valuable possessions, we are to aban don them to their unhappy fate, to become only in a littl while the proud possession of some grasping foreign power. Will any intelligent ro'ei' sanction snch a recreant opinion and policy at the polls. in June? This the Oregon voter must decide before giving his snpporl to i a candidate for congress, governor, state senator or representative. We should not send to the lower branch of congress or Eend to Washington a senator believing in letting the Phil ippinf s go. That'wonldbe a back ward step an at that would eatie Filipinos and Spaniards, who shot down the brave American boys, yea, members of the gallant Second Ore gon, to snicker al our cowardice, for getful nees, ignorance and lack of sagacity. If nothing else wonld make a man a republican this ques tion should, and if anything should make a man a fighting republican it is the thought of the Stars and Stripes waving over the Philippines, and the fear that Old Glory might be pulled down and Failure" stamped upon the American brow. Remem ber the utterance cf onr martyred McKinley, "There must be no sent tie policy," when yon prepare your ticket on June 2, and bear in mind also that the present era of unprece dented prosperity is due to republic an legislation, and administration. A DEMOCRATIC HIRELING. The rum-besotted hireling of the Democratic party at Draiu continues to libel and villify Hon, A. II. Craw ford and Senator Marsters through the columns of his blackmail sheet. Xo decent man and especially a re publican, could btitdtsire the opposi tion of that sheet and its di-isipated b'ack-guard editor, as the support of such a paper would condemn aud relegate to utter oblivion any self -respecting man, be he a Republican or a Democrat. There is not an intelligent voter in the coun ty but recognizes the fact that, as chairman of the county Republican central committf e, Hon. A. M. Craw ford's chief duty was to take an active part in directing the political rv , f 1 1 ...... r t .,1. 1.. ... . :. .. 1 1... 1 . . . tne various precinct commiiieemen, and had he failed to perform this duty, his resignation as chairman would have beeu very promptly de- mauded by republicans ot Lou- J ,, WHS ,ieep in this county, glas county. As a hireling of the Democratic party the Heary-eyed giu-mill at Drain is m .1 i n- only expected to oppose the Jtepubli- can ticket and in his weak way snp- port Democracy, but that does not liceus him to libel and villify decent men, which action howeyer, only re- j fleets dUcredit and heaps contempt j npou himself and his democratic managers. A lit subject is Kelly to do the dirty work of the Democratic bosses and a few disloyal l.epnbh caus, and were it not for the fact that he is totally depraved, devoid even of self-respect and common de cency, and exerts no influence what- j ever we might condescend to give, him Rome consideration, but as it is i we are n;it urally a little relui-lanl : about lighting with a skunk i For tin two years from July 1, ; lSiK. to Julv 1, l'XHI. the county was under a union administration aud j the county debt whs reduced nearly : f'.KKNt. Kosebtirg Review. Yes, and ; ! the big F.at I'mpqnabridgecollapsed : on account of the union coiiidy judge refusing to make the slight repairs rin it. which would have preserved it for uianv years: the big I'mpqua Ferry bridge, the Calapooia bridge, aud many other important bridges came near doing likewise. lfure the union Judge resigned aud a Repub lican Judge could make the necessary repaira. It is very easy to i;i:it t the county debt under such methods, but it is exceedingly hazardous to thu life and property of the county's tax payers. If the voters desire a repe tition of Democratic false economy and foolishness, why, vote for the Democratic candidates for county judge and commissioners. The fact that Zopher Agee is a "nice boy" is no reasou why he should be intrusted with the very imnnrtiint and rsnonsihl nosition of clerk of one of the largest ami most progressive counties of the state, a position which also inclades 8 membership of the board of equali zation. To place 60 young a man and one with so little bnsine ex perience in such a responsible posi tion, especially as a successor to a man of such mature jadgruent, so faithful lo duty atnl the trust reposed in him, and so eminently well fitted and qualilied for the Ksitiou as David Ii. Shambrook has proved himself, would 1m little less thau an outrage. We don't think the voter will do it. To talk abont electing the Demo cratic ticket in order to put down corruption and riux methods is like advocating the fauning of the flame to extinguish a lire. If there is nny thing the Dem-icrnls have an estab lished record on it is cormtd meth ods and machine olilics. Lock at Tammany for instance, hw now. they have i-hjiturwl arid t.nt int-j nterH tion on h uii'ie t-iaovrato scl than eyer, the notorious Simon machine at Portland, Do Ihe voters want lo es tablish a Tammany Hall and Simon ring in this county ? If so. vole the Democratic tn-ket. The lleview'a silence on the vir tnes, qualifications aud fitness of i'.s eonuty candidates for office leads one to lielietre it is entertaining a forlorn hope for the election of Ihe Demo cratic ticket in this county. Il is not unlike the school loy who ws told by his teacher that he must study , La,.l or be never would be President of the United States, "Well, I don't exieet to,'" he replied, "I'm a Demo crat." The Democratic county candidates opened their campaign at Glendale last Saturday, and were accompanied by O. V. Coshow the Roseburg attor ney, who nets in the capacity of spell-binder for the aggregation. If Mr. Coshow is repeating his conven- tion sjieit-h while swinging around J the circle, it will le safe to place your estimate of the republican ma jorities a few notches higher. 'Gene'' Parrott, while vigilant. brve and daring a terror to evil doers has during his term as sheriff proven himself a safe, efficient and cool headed officer of the law. He makes no fatal uor even insignificant blunders. He is the kind of a man Douglas county needs for sheriff and he will lie re-elected. Union labor organizations will do a little figuring in this election, and their interests in the Oregon legis lature will Im ably championed and guarded by Jas. SI. Ilansbrough, the genial and popular Republican can didate for joint representative of Douglas and Jackson counties. One of the Kansas fellows who lately returned home from Douglas county told his home paper that the over to Drain Thursday eveuing, which the Draiu (iin-mill published Friday as an important special (Ireat enterprise, indeed! I'rof. Wauu, Democratic candidate for . state school superintendent, ought to be popular with the trnent and drone students, in Inn advocacy of fewer studies in school, shorter school hours and uo home study. Now May has arrived, and during her :U days perhaps she will succeed in winding up the affairs of Winter. Mr. David Rennet t Hill and Mr. William Jennings Hryan are beating each other aronud the bush. SUPREME COURT DECISIONS.
