About Oregon's First Apples. Mb. Editor; I noticed in Thursday's Plaindealek an ar.icle headed "Ihe first apples grown in Oregon." I do not in e tend to know much about tbe first ap ples grown in Oregon, bnt I waa told when I firs; came to Oregon in 1H47 that there were bearing apple trees growing at tbe Hudson Bay Station oa tbe Ump- qaa river, opposite, or nearly so, to the month ol Elk creek, where Elk ton now stands. I know there were bearing ap ple trees there with quite a qnantily of apples on them in the fall of 1850. M A. R. Flint, father of oor present towns man, a runt, told me auen be came np the riv r from where Scottsborg now lands, in ths fall of I860 that he and Several others slaved over night at the station ; that in tbe morning Mrs. Gar oir the sqnaw wife of John Garmr, tbe station agent, presented them all with frrab apples grown on the premises ex state senat jr, Henry Beckiy, to J "noM "e property now belongs told me that there was a good many seedling apples trees trailed from those old trees at ths station, at that time call ed tort linpg,ua, sboaitg that they ware a very g-od quality of appiea. Tuos Smith, Roeebnrg, Oregon, lec. 6, l'JOI. Big Profit from Small Ore hards. Last week these col am told of I he iun menite yield of apples Irom a thrre-acre orchard, near Central Point. Oar in formant waa somewhat in error as to tbe exact amoont of frmt gathered. We pnot this week a communication from Central Poiut which covers the ground completely. The communication is igoed hy one of the moat honorable and successful citisens of that loan, bat the signal are is not affixed lo it because of very good reasons given by tbe writer The item here follows: '"As an evidence ol the possibilities of tbe Iron industry in Jackson County, the fol!o sing wonder iQiproniiiom mree acres ol apple or chard, one mile nortL of Central Pont, may be cited : "Tho crop waa booght by W. 11. Nor- cross, an extensive froit shipper, f.irtsj rents a box on Ihe trees in the orchard. Tbe oaoer, J. W. Merrill, realized $1251 9) for the season's yield, which was 13'.)1 boxes. Mr. Nrcroes sold the Iruit lor $1.15 per box, realizing $l3s 75 from three acres of ten-year old apple trees. This shows tbe wonderful profit of the industry, alien orclnr.ls are prop erly pruned, cultivated and protected from fruit pets. Jackson County ia tbe greatest fruit producii'g aecti in of Ore gon, and capitalists are arririug dailv, baying up the cream of the valley, aud setting it to apple trees, principally New. town Pippins and Spi subnrgs. Men who have been ia lbs frail boins for years are purchasing more land and set ting ont mor irees Ibis lall. Farmers are realising tbe advantage of frail over wheat ; and gradually setting their entire holdings with finit trees." Medford Mail, Their Views of the Message. Orrgon'a delegation in Congress Hives their opinion of President Roosevelt's message ss follows: Senator Mitchell approve tbe message especially that portion of it which favors tbe Nicaragua Canal, Chinese exclusion and tbe suppression of anarchy. He 8ys lt is a moat creditable review of Ihe country's condition. Senator Simon said: "I regard tbe whole message as a masterful effort on the w bole part ol tbe President, lt is forcible and to the point. Tbe treat ment of the forestry and irrigation ques lions shows tbe President lo be eesen lially a Wet tern man." Representative Tongue did not bear Ibe message read, so withholds bis opio ion. Mr. Moody said : "It ia an able and nniqne document. I am especially pleased with tbe impottaoce be gives to topics of vital interests to tbe PaoiBr Coatt, su.;b as tbe Nicaragua Canal, Chi ties exclusion and arid land reclama tion. I also admire bis fearless and fair discoeeion of the trust question and strong oeiiion Isken on anarchy immigration legislation.". the aud Wood Wanted.
