beauties during the summer. Seuthnental feelings stirred
the breasts of the many who passed through the turnstiles
today to have the last look at the court of honor, the la
goons4 the Midway and the many wonders contained iu the
big exhibition buildings. Train loads of packing cases are
already ariving on the grounds and there arc numerous
other evidences that the end is at hand. The chill breezes
of autumn have had their effect on the people of the Mid
way and many of them are looking forward eagerly to their
return to warmer climes. As the contract entered into be
tween the exposition company and the owners of the
grounds stipulates that every vistage of the exposition
shall be removed within a year, it has been arranged to be-
iu work of demolition as soon as the gates close for the
ast time Saturday night.

LARGE STOCK OF PRUNES.
San Jose, Cal., Oct., 30. Local packers estimate the
crop of prunes of Santa Clara county, this year at 40,000,-
000 pouuas wuicn, logeiuer wiiu me esumatea 20,000,000
of the Italian variety produced by Oregon, Washington
and Idaho, constitutes a total crop of 60,000,000 pounds
As more than 1,000 carloads of last year's crop on hand no
effort is being made as yet to dispose of the new crop and
the growers are showing some signs of uueaoiness lest the
market become glutted and a decline in prices result.
BOTHA'S NARROW ESCAPE.
Pretoria, Uct. 29. Commandant Botha s recent es

ver and papers behind. Ten prisoners, including Com
mandant Hans Bjtha and former Landrost Schuttc, were
captured.

A RACE RIOT.
Columbia, South Carolina, Oct. 29. Two thousand
shots were fired here today in a race riot. Ten persons
