Close of Pan-American Exposition. Transvaal to be Re-peopled. Portland, Oct. 29. For the heroism displayed in the recent hold-up of the Southern Pacific train near Eueene, Express Messenger Charles P. Charles will be rewarded by his cmplojcr, the Wells Fargo Company. The reward will come in the shape of promotion, but to what position is not yet definitely known by any one here. The mes senger, however, has received orders to proceed to San Francisco, where before many weeks he will be satisfactor ily placed. As a result Mr. Charles is packing up his be lougiugs at his little home at 14S North Sixteenth street, preparatory to starting South. Relative to the transfer of Mr. Charles, Eugene Shel by, the Wells, Fargo Conipauy's Portland agent, today said: "Yes, it is true that Mr. Charles will be trausferred to a better position in San Francisco, but as to just what po sition will be given him I cannot say. A. Christeusor, manager of the Pacific Coast Departmeut, I understand, will find room for Mr. Charles down South, and through his superintendent has notified him to that effect. It has, however, been Mr. Charles' desire for some time to te transferred, so as to make San Francisco his home, for the reason that his relatives live there, so while his transfer may be looked upon as a promotion, it would probably have occurred regardless of the recent act of bravery. "When iu San Francisco a couple of days ago I learned that the officials there had discussed Mr, Charles' promo tion, aud I understood that something would be done - iu recoguitiou of his services, for arrangements were then be- iug made to piace him."
