Cottage Groyh, Oct. 18. The much expected rail
road surveyors, who are to locate permanently the route of
the Cottage Grove-Bohemia railroad, arrived on yesterday
afternoon's local, full' equipped and ready for the field.
The party under the mauagement of Mr. P. J. Jeuuings
will make their headquarters at Cottage Grove and push
their work as rapidly as possible towards completion before
bad weather becomes the rule. It is not anticipated any
material opposition will be met with in granting rights of
way as all along the route farmers realize the importance
of a railroad from Cottage Grove to Bohemia and the im
mense advantages accruing from its building. The dam
age resulting from running through their farms will be
more than compensated for by the increased value of their
adjoining land. This is proved by history. There has
been rumors afloat that the road would be built to Saginaw
or Eugene but we believe there is nothing in the move
more than talk. However if such fear should deter any
from giving a right of way Mr. Jcuuiugs no doubt, is in a
position to satisfy all such persons as to there being auy
thing in the rumor. Of course there are some people who
doubt the building of the road. To such, time alone, in all
probability will prove to them their belief was in error.
Action speaks londer than words and a well organized sur
veying part actively in the field means considerable ex
pense. Surveying parties are not luxuries to which
moneyed men are addicted by habit, and the peoDle behind
Mr. Jennings in this move evidently mean business. They
have expended a large amount of money iu Bohemia which
is a proof of their faith in the camp, and it is not in reason
to suppose they will continue to do so just for the sake of
blowing it in.
We are going to have a railroad, let us make up our
minds to that fact and let our business men and all others
pnt their shoulders to the wheel and make a uuanimous pull,
an intelligent pull and a hearty pull and if it fails the
blame cannot rest upon the shoulders of Cott3ge Grove
people.

FORTY MEN KILLED IN NEW YORK TUNNEL.
New York, Oct. 18. Forty workmen were killed in
this city today by 50 tons of rock caving iu the rapid tran
sit tunnel on Broadway. A large number of others are im
prisoned in the tunnel but are thought to be safe.
The excitement in the city was intense. The bullet
in boards of the leading newspapers were surrounded by
thousands of people.
It was pitiable in the extreme to see women and rela
tives weep who had relatives at work in the tunnel.
. An investigation of the causes of this terrible acciden
will be held. .
