Outlook Unfavorable for Miss Stone's
Release. Survey of Bohemia
Railroad.
T a. a a n w. . m
wjauum, ocuio. ine uiote tuis aiternoon savs it
fears that the safety of Miss Ellen M. Stone is seriously
compromised by the attitude of Consul-General Dickinson
in refusing to pay the ransom and in demanding that Bul
garia arrest tue headers ot the Macedonian Committee, as
the real authors of the missionary's abduction. The paper
says the situation contains all the factors of a grave inter
national complication and threatens to assume importance
ar beyond the personality of any individual missionary.
INJ EW York, Oct. 18. The correspondent at Samakov
of the Journal and Advertiser cables that paper as follows:
"It is learned that Mme. Bakmetiew, wife of the Rus-
e " a . .
sian diplomatic agent at Sofia, formerly Miss Beal, of
Washington, has begun energetic work in behalf of Miss
Stone, and the strong attitude taken by the German diplo
matic agent, because of the murder of a German traveler.
may hasten the authorities to bring about Miss Stone's re-
ease. The Bulgarian authorities are working hard to pre
vent the ransom from being paid on Bulgarian soil. Hence
Dr. Haskell is likely to get another letter requesting pay
ment of the ransom on Turkish territory."
MISS STONE'S CAPTORS LOCATED.
New York, Oct iS.Revr Wardlow Thompson, di
rector of the Collegians Theological Institute at Sofia, ca
bles the following from Samanov, Bulgaria, to the Journal
and Advertiser, the details concerning Miss Stone, the
kidnapped missionary: .
"The headquarters of Miss Stone's captors is a thicklv
wooded mountain top near the boundary line of Turkey
and Bulgaria. Miss Stone has only light summer clothing
and a cotton dress. The brisrands refused to allow rif-r tn
keep her baggage, but let her have a Bible. The leader of
the band is the notorious Bocho, from the Bulgarian town
of Dubnitza. . . .
"We sent word to Constantinople pointing out that
being private individuals we can not prevent the Govern
ment from pressing brigands; also that the ransom is . too
princely. No such sum was ever heretofore demanded.
No rejoinder has yet been received. Usually brigands ask
1000 and then agree for hsdf. '
"Twenty-five thousand Turkish pounds means two
horse loads of gold and that is more gold than there is now
in Bulgaria. Besidos the brigands demand payment in
Turkish gold for which it would be necessary to send to
Constantinople. I should not give the brigands the rau
som until Miss Stone is safely delivered to us, as they
might murder her after receiving the money. . The more
desperate brigands murder after ransom in ' order to seal
the lips forever. We have three theological institute stu.
dents who were captured in the Stone party. One tells
