State Chairman ' Franklin Murphy was today unanimously nominated as ., candidate "or Governor by the Republican State convention. The platform as adopted, demands the enactment of laws, state and National, for the effective suppression of anarchistic teachings; approves the system of reciprocity treaties,' sub sidies for American ships and the building of the Isthmian canal. Continuing-, the platform' savs: ... 1 ue picuge oi rresiaeni i-ooseveii mat ne win con tinue absolutely unbroken the policy of President McKin t . i- 1 . - cy nas our unquanneaapDrovai, ana we lenaer to nun our oyal support." , The platform also pledges the Republican "use the surplus for the fuitber reduction of. the ocal taxation, the enlargement of our school sj'slem, the benefit of our industries, and the common interest and wel fare of the whole people." - The convention was called to order shortly after noon by Senator E. C. Stokes. There were Soq delegates. Etf- United States Attorney-General Griggs was selected as temporary chairman. On taking the chair, he delivered an address in which, referring to the death of President McKmley, he said: . "Mr. McKmley was a great leader who believed in his party, but his policy was not that of vituperation, but one or patriotism ana reasoning, aud lie always uad tue iespcct even to his political opponents. This should be a lesson to us in the manner of conducting a campaign at this time. We should appeal to the reason of every man." A delegate, named Van Riper, who said he was an old time Whig, wanted the resolution amended so as to con demn the Democratic party for having preached the doc trine of anti-imperialism which, he said, was the founda tion of nihilism in the United States, aad led by the mur der of McKinley. After the adoption of the platform Franklin Murphy was nominated for Governor by acclamation. Mr. Murphy, in accepting the nomination, paid a tribute to the late Pres ident McKinley, and said the mantle of Elijah had fallen on Elisha, in the person of President Roosevelt, of whose capacity and high purposes there was no doubt. Mr. Mur phy closed by attributing thr prosperity of the Nation to the Republican party. r, The Rich Fields " Uncovered Will Rival Those of California or Texas INVESTORS WILL REAP A" HARVEST The old days of Titusville and Oil City, where fortunes were made in a night will be completely outdone by the magnificent oil . fields to be uncovered and "developed in Southern Oregon.
