Sm.e of the (acts periainioK to Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Alaska, hronuhl out by the annual repot i of the commissioner of the ie tiers-1 Ln l office, and which haye heretof jre escaped notice, are of more or less interest, especially as showing the general character and extent of work ac complished by the lnd divi iu in the North ares' . For instance, on June 30 last, tbere were 35,328,338 acies of vacant public lauds in Oreguu, 11,530,550 acres in War-hingt jii, 43,Wo',4.J8 acres in Idaho aud oO'J.-TJi.TtiO ttovs in Alaka. Over 21,000,000 aeres of the Vacant laud io Oreg u has Devn euiveyetl, and about half of the lard in Wat biugtuu, but in Idaho tut UJOO.UtX) if the 43,000,000 acres have tt been surveyed, and in AUeka pracjically all uftheljndis yet unsurveyed. Of tour so some UutU are no w reset wd in tacii of ihet-e Hal e, 5,500,821 acres in Ore en, 12.530 500 aces in Washington, nearly 2,0 JO ,000 acres in Idaho and nearly '.l,000.(.00 acres iu Alaska. Furthermore, there are ap propriated lauds as fullotTB: OreuoU, 20,44S,2,Sl acres ; Wabhiutoii, 1S,4")!,53) acres; IJ.ilio, 7.551,223 acier, but in Alaska the I audi are unappropri ated. A cta'.emeut is made showing the number oi acres reprtsented by niilitaiy bounty warrants iu the several states. which gives Oregon 320 acres and Wash ington S00 acre. About 40,080 acne weie selected by 6tate cf Oregon as rchoo! laud iudeuinity aud the seltu'tiuiis aire approved aud certified, while the state of Washington, t)t f icuilar purposes securtd 24,'.31 acres. The land ir. Oregon was mainly iu the Oregon City acd Tue ljlles laud dis tricts, w hile that ia Washington was all in the Olytnpia diatiict. Mineral aud uiill-fei'e pai n's to tie extent ot 15 were issued iu Oregon, 3tt in Washington, 57 iu Idaho aud three ia Alaska. In a like manner, one coal Ian I patent was iseut-d in Oregon and fire in WaahioKton, the former embrac ing 10) acies, and the lat'er 810 acres. The lands patented on account of rail roads in these states were not rxteDStve, compara'ively, ahbougli 07,015 arres in Oregon went to the Oregon & California tod 100 teres to the Northern 1'aciuY, The Northern Pacific also secured 37,385 acres io Washington, and 103,423 aires in Idaho. Tneie sre 14,915 sens of swamp lards In Oiein, making the total amount tf such ljnds in the tttte patruted since the date cf .he grant 237,- 483 acres. Tne forest reservations io Oregon re main! uccbanged the Cascade ranee forett refer ve em bracing 4,4n2,800 acres, making it the largest reserve of the kind in the United Stales; the Boll Eon re serve hot Jing iu 142,080 acies, and the Ashland reserve its 13,560 acres Tbe Monet Riinitr reservation in Washing ton was reduced by the formation of tbe Moant Kanier National park, eo that the reservation now embraces but 2,027, 520 acree. Toe Olympic reserve was un changed and the Waahingtoo forest re set ve was changed bnt little. TLe Bitter Root reserve of Idaho and Moutaca, with its 4,147,200 acre, was unchanged, and for size ranks next to tbe Cascade reserve cf Oregon. The Priest-river reserve of Idaho and Wash ingtcn, bid,i:.U acre, was also un touched. The Afoguak forest and fish culture reserve of AUrka, created in 1M12, remained unchanged, but its ex tent has not yet been ''eteruiined. An encouraging r. j-ort is shown with regard to forest tires in the various for est reservations, which illustrates that the system of forest rangers, and other forestry officials works to the decided ad vantage of tbe interests of these forests. For instance, in Oregon there were but 76 fires duiicg the year, aud 04 of them were mere camp fires that had been de serted and bad done no dsmage. Tbe remaining 12 were checked before any serious or extensive damage had been done. In the Washington reserves there were but 20 fires, and none serious, although in Idaho 112 fires were extinguished by the forestry official before any damage nsd been doiwC UHMCtf tbe past year examinations looking, to the adjust urvnt ii railroad grants to the Northern Pacific, on both main li e and branch in Oregon and Washington, were completed. Ove. 1061 acres of the Klamath Indian reserve in Oregou, and 1221 acres of tbe Colville Indian reset ve in Washington were disposed of by the land author itiee. Tbe surveyors of the laud otfica during the Ubt year surveyed 382,175 acres of land in Oregon, 637,636 acres ia Wash ingtou, acd 799.503 seres in Idaho, all of which surveys were approved. For con ducing this work, the money was ap portioned as follows: Twenty thousand dollars for Oregon, T 10,000 for Washington, and f j2,000 for Idaho, according to iho ameunt and na tare of tbe land to be surveyed. Among the accepted surveys were those of the Fort Klamath hay reservation in Oregon auid the ceJed portion of tbe Colville res ervation, Wash. In referring especially to Alaska tbe report makes the following state' ments: 'One townsite entry and 15 Don min eral entries, Lave been madeiu Alaska. Tbe townsite entry (Joncao) and two uonuiineral entries have been patented, while the others have been suspended for various reasons, such as illegal sur veys, alleged nii.ieral character tf the ;and in vol vail, incttlTiciency of the proof eubuiitted. etc. 'Uy the act of May 14, 1808, prevision was made for right of way for railroads, trauiroads and wagon roads in the dis tt id of Alaska. With the ratnw. eeaton fully upon us there is a tendency on tbe part of cow owners, and particularly those who keep but small number, to be Irregular in the time of milking. Tuere is not much to be done on tbe farm and late rising is qutie apt tobe the rule, and a desire to have tbS chores done before darkness eels in, causes tbe milking to be done early in the evening. Tiips to town, an "ccasionsl full day's work ou the farm and other causes, may make the milking hour earlier than usual in the morning and later in the evening, thus giving rise to an irregularity in the milking hoar. All really prvgreative dairymen have a regular tune for milking al all seasons ol the year. It does not matter eo much what tbe hour :s, but it is best to hare the intervals between milkings nearly equal. Six cows wers divided Into two lots, such that the average age ot tbe cows and period of lactatiou. also total yield of milk were practically the same for each lot. The two lots received tbe same kind and amount of feed, bnt tbe cows in Lot I were fed and tu.Ued regu larly al 4 :30 p. u. and 5:30 a.m. while those in lot 2 were fed and milked at hours ranging from 5:00 to 9:00 a. in and 4 :00 to 6:00 p. m. A comparison c the milk yield for three weeks, uuder this arrangement, with the three weeks preceding showed that the cows in Lot 1 made a gain in yield of 5.9 per ceot, while those in Lot 2 decreased in- yield 4.4 per cent. Assuming that the cows in Lot 2 would have done as well as those in Lot 1 if they bad had the same treat moot, which is highly probable, we find a loss of practically ten percent in tte milk yield during' three wetkt, due to irregularity in milking and feeding. The loss, however, wai coofioed to tbe milk yield ks tbere was practically no cba- e in the quality of tbe milk during the st period. 1 e gain in ) ield by Lat 1 was doubt lesi doe to better feed sod care than was received duriug the preceding three weeks. Oregon Agricultural College and Expoiiment Station. Infected With Scale Saikm, Or., Nov. 6 Lloyd T. Rey nolds, horticultural cotnmiseioner fr the second district, last week condemned a part oLa shipmeut of apples teceiveJ at Salem from Southern Oreg 111. Mr. Reynolds savs that on examination, part of the boxen were found to contain apples affected with Sau Jose ft ale. Iu accordance with instructions, the apples were dot-troyed. The diseased apples all came from one orchard, and it was possible, to deter mine who was the producer. In cases of this kind the loss almost iuva.iably falls upon the grower, for, whether the fruit is consigned or sold direct, the man in whose bands the fruit is condemned looks to tbe shipper for reimr-nrsemeot. In this particular cate the grower not only lost hie apples, but ,1bo Daj l0 pa, tj,9 expenses of peck- io jr. sbippiog and destroying.
