CURR V COUNTY MURDER.

S. C. Gillespie, the accused murderer
of Mrs. Edson in Curry county, after
being arrested by Constable McFarland.
at Cottane Grove and bnnght to liose
burf, made a voluntary statement to
District Attorney Erown as to his where
abouts at tbe time the crime was com
mitted. The statement was made Oct. 1
nnder interrogation.
The officers, npon investigation, have
found most of bis Etatement to be un
true. That Gillespie was not in Gold
Beach at all at the times stated, to the
knowledge of the parties be claimed to
have seen and conversed with there. In
fact bis hereabouts at all times from
his leavioj; Zamwali'e Friday nigbt,
Sept. 15, nntil he appeared at Louis
Koapp's on Wednesday morning, Sept.
20, has not been completely traced.
The pension check issued to Mrs. Ed
son ia alao a very strong piece nf evi
dence. It ia dated at San Francisco on
Sept. 15, and could only have reached
Mrs. Edson through tbe mails on Tues
day. That night the crime waa committed,
and next morning Gillespie appeared at
Louis Kcapp', and thence his move
ments are definitely known.
It is believed that afrer leaving Zu

of his intended victim, and awaited
favorable epport unity for commission of
the deed. He has eincn virtoatl a.lmir.

Ultimatum to the British.
Cai itowx, Oct 10. The Transvaal
government has sect an ultimatum to
Great Britain.
London, Oct. 10. A London news
agerjey publishes the following dispatch
from Pretoria, filed there at 7:40 p. m
yesterday: "An urgent dispatch has
j'ist been handed to Conyngham Greeoe,
tbe Britten diplomatic agent, requesting
explicit assurance of the withdrawal
within 43 hours ot all British forces
landed in Sjuth Africa since the Bloem
fontein coufereuce."
The effect cf the news of the Trnnsvaal
ultimatum upon the stock exchange was
steadying. Kaffirs were firm or in tbe
telief that the most gigantic gold in-dut-try
ia the world will le in
corporated in the British colony as an
cntcome cf the war.
The text of the Transvaal ultimatum,
it in tu di-rsloud, is on the wsy to the
British foreign office. According to lat
est advices, the time limit expires to
morrow atternojn at 5 o'clock, when, i'
the demands of the Boers are not com
plied ith, the further landing or dis
patch of troopi will be considered an
act of war, and boMilin'es will com
mence. I a ordinary circumstances, as
Great Britain is the government mak
ing the demands, she would be the dis
patcher of an ul'iinatium, and the fact
ihftt the Boers have taken the initiative
is regarded as rendering the situation
more seiious and increasing the hope
lessness of avertiug warfare.
