Tbe Noonday and Mu stek lead with a'uut 4 500 and 4,000 re spectively, while the Champion, Heleca, Vesuvius and others have a good show iug. The average cost of tbe tnr.nels is estimated at f$ per foot, showing JjJlOS. 0C0 ex ie ruled for this work alone. As a bsis on which to consider tbe financial investment it it stated that the Moeick mine under tbe manage ment of J. W. Cook, its former tnperin ter.aant, yielded $90,CO0; tbe old Kno'.t uine, 10,000, and tbe Champion mine, fo.OCO a total of f l&.OOO, stowing tbat even in tbe infancy of the district it has proven a care of "'money back.' liul in addition to this tbe Helena, Yesuvi.,8 and other properties have yielded more than handsome returns on tbe money ex pended opon them. It is not essential to say niacb for tbe camp It peaks fur itself. Paring tbe pist summer mining men ol prominence from every Western camp, including Colorado aud Drilieb Columbia, have visited Bohemia, and are aoqualtfird in asserting that its suiface prospects are tbe rkhect cf ary camp tbey kuow, while eminent geologists state tbat tL mountains are of vo'.canic origin and show true, normal fissures . prove almost beyond doubt tbat ore will be found in limitless quanties. Tee camp is devel oping into baee ore district, in fact, is virtually considered sjoow.so that one thing only is efsenlial to iu success and greatness proof tbat the ore is there in depth and quality. When a depth of 1000 or lbuO feet is reached by some company, and ore found in paying quan tities, a Cripple Creek mining boom can not by any possible means be averted. The ledgee are visibl.- on the suiface and show pay ere from tbe grass root, and do not deteriorate at any depth so far attained, a criterion from which one can become optimistic as to Bohemia's future. The Musitk mine is operating its 15 etamp mill, running 21 hours a day and grinding 25 tons of ore in that time. Stocks & Harlow's 5-ttamp mill is run ning on Vesuvius ore. Tbe Noonday company will start 10 stamps within a week, an i probably mere, and it is not impossible tbat the Champion mill will soon be again iu active operation. At least 200 are now on company pay rolls. This of itself shows not lees tban J3000 per week paid for labor in tbe district an indication of activity not to be disre garded. The point is now reached which is vital to Eugene aad her interests. With, this number of men employed in mines 45 miles away, with tbeir con stant demands for mining materials, clothing, boots, shoe, groceries, canned goods, ami all things used in mining eections, can ter business men afford to refuee, as tbey have done so long, to mtke a herculean eff):t to secure this money and this trade. Freight in hauled into the mines from Cottage Grove at tbe present time at the high tariff of f-0, a good 5-horee tram hauling 3StMJ pounds. Eagene business men could tend a dinmmer iuto this district, take orders, equip a train ol freighting teams, increasing tbeir sales thousands of dollsrs each year, and make money. AU tbe freight for tbe Blue Itiver district goes from Eugene, why not Bohemia? Another poiut. The Booth-Kelly Lumber Co., represented to tbe Southern Pacific Company tbat tbe could furnish so much business from a mill to be erected on the Mohawk, and that rail road offered to build a branch to the mill providing a right of way is secured. Cannot tue Eugene Board of Trade arouse from i's Kip Van Winkle slum bers, fend representatives to tbe mining sections, tabulate the statements of trade to be acquired and secure a similar of fer? The mining people would hail such en terprise with delight, and tbe road could be built to tin (out of tbe district on a very low per cent grade, at a minimum of cost. Will tbe future of Eugene be tbat of a supply point for tbe growing Bohemia and Blue Biver mining sections, or will it allow other aud smaller towns to usurp its just rights through procrastination? Tbe stakes are large, and a winning band should be played. H. W. Rowland. TUB KOUKXIA Ml.VfcS. Tbe Klondike of Oregon commonly called to Bohemia mining district, situ ated in the eastern part of this and Lane counties, is, without doubt, destined to become tbe greatest mining camp in tbe West. Tbe rapid strides being made to ward development work and tbe flatter ing reports to be beard on all sides are enough to give it tbe great notice it now receiving from mioin; men and cap italists all over tbe country. Having just returned from a week's visit to these mines, we have been made to appreciate more thin ever tbe great richness and magnitude of Ibis mioeral country There is 'apposed to be not less than 500 men now variously engaged in Ibis di tnct, besides tbe large number who go in daily for pleasure, recreation, and sight-seeing. Tbe roads are lined with four and six-horse freight teams, haul ing machinery and supplies into the mines and returning with concentrates for shipment to tbe Tacouia smelter. Cottage Grove is receiving great benefit from thee mines, and is sure ti become a citv of prominence. New residences are going up all over tbe cily, and stv. eral business houses are also under co-ue of construction. Indications w e never more favorable tban at prea- cut for a good showing in these mines, an I we need not expect to hear anything too great from tbat section. The Pessimistic Populist.
