In the battle of Malabon ou Saturday, .March 25,
1S99. the Second Oregun regiment, U. S '., tok an
active and leading part and displayed- courage, valor
and endurance of the highest order. Ior years to
New York, Aug. S. A d Li patch L the
World from Eennes says: Maitre Lv
bori talks with remarkable freedom on
the attitude of the judges. The corres
pondent of tLe World asked him :
"Eo yoo feel quite sore of victory this
time?"
"Yee, entirely," he sahl confidently.
"The judget ara already assured of D.-ey-f
us' innocence. Only old Colonel Jouan
ebs eeexE seems shall I say afraid, lest
he appear prejudiced. So he appears
unnecessarily harsh toward Dreyfus.''
"Do you think 'he general opinion is
that Dreyfas is too vehement?"
Tut yourself in bis place," answered
Labori, with leeling. Naturally he is
nxioug to impress Lis judges. This
wretcbad joke has already lasted too
long."
"How long with the trial last, do vcu
think?"
Labori Ehrugged bis ehouidem,
' Anywhere from eight days to three
months. I bave no idea what tactics
tbe government commissioner intends to
adopt. I am not in bis confidence. All
these fine soldiers keep as much from
me as tbey possibly can."
Madame Dreyfas was not in court be
cause of the increased number of anony
mous threatening letters she daily re
ceives. Her villa is now protected night
and day by an increased force of gen
darmes. DeMange, one of Dreyfus' at
torneys, eaye that be is convinced tbe
examination of the much-talked-aboot
"secret dossier" the war department's
mysterious budget of documents on
which Dreyfus was condemned five years
ago will not require more than two
sessions. He said :
"As soon s they exhibit the d;co
ments we will puncture their famous
secret dossier, and it will be shown that
there is nothing in it. Colonel Jouansle
knows it."
Vindication cf Dreyfus.
The trial of Dreyfas at Cennes this
week is rather a judicial viac'.ication
than a trial, for every holy now knows
that Dreyfas is innocent, or at least that
there is no proof against him. Appar
ently little interest is taken in tbe trial
in France, yet it is one of the most re
markable incidents of trie century. All
France that bad a voice joined in con
demning and convicting Dreyfus; and
when Zola exposed the horrible con
spiracy against him, denounced tbe con
spirators, and demanded justice, nearly
all France bowled for Zola's blood and
would not bear of justice for Dreyfus.
Yet in tbe space of a few months Zola
triumphs, tbe conspirators Eink out of
sight, Dreyfus is brought back for vin
dication, and rolatile France, though
not yet ready to make a hero of him, is
indifleYently contented. Dreyfus owes
bis liberation and vindication first to his
wife, next to Zola, next to the truirpet
tongued protest of the Anglo-Saxon
world, and finally to the substitution of
an honest and fearless for a corrupt and
despicable administration.

There is an old saying that it takes a ton of lead to
