This is oue oi tbe most fertile and prosperous sections of the elate. Tue Talley proper is about 15 by ;0 miles in extent and the soil is varied in character, from tbe heavy loam of Tbe Cove, where all (be fiuita of Ihe temper ate aum are grown to perfection, to tbe stndy noil of the "Sand Ridge" where the cereals yield enormously. They were t-hown the beet tields in the vicinity of La Grande and bad explained to them the modus-operandi of the manufacture of sugar in the factory there. Tbey saw tbe deep canyons, the towering peaks and pine (otets of tbe j Blues and the whe.it fi!Ji of tLe Uma tilla aud Walla Walla Section was a revrlali&n lo tuera. Tbey also saw the sand dunes along the Columbia between Wailala and The Dalles, bat these did net excite tbeir admiration. They saw tbe gorge of tbe Columbia wbere tbe mighty river of tbe west breaks through the Cascade range aud rushes on to tbe sea. Here tbey were tilled with wonder and admiration, and lbs exclamations of delight were many as tbe points of inter eet Sd in rapid succession before them. Castle Kock.Oneota, Multnomah Falls, Ctidal Veil, Latoorelle, Ugoster Hxk followed each other so quickly that tbe visiters coul 1 scarcely take in mil tte procession. Tbey reached Portland tbe evening of the Fourth. Tte next three days were spent in convention and in seeing tbe sights in about the city of Portland. The weather was perfect all tbe time, and the snow peaks that Ore gon ians delight to show to visitors were at tbeir best and were a continuous show tbe whole lime. There were fetes aud receptions ga lore, and tbe delegates were free to say that tbe people of Oregon wete tbe moat hospitable on earth. Oar climate alio caae in for a share f praise and tbe cool nights were, to llioie from the SouUi es pecially, a source of tunch comfort. On Saturday they were taken down tbe Col umbia to Astoria and Seaside, and from tbe moment tbe traiu stopped at tbe Astoria station nntil it left there in tbe evening it was one continuous ovation. Tbey watched tbe salmon as the fish were taken from tbe boats and then fol lowed tbe process through tbe cleaning, catting &p and canning till they were ready for market, and each visitor was presented with a souvenir can of salmon to take home with him or her. At the seaside scores of excursionists gazed lor tbe first time on old ocean, and tbe breakers rolling op noon tbe beach and receding, as they have done for count less a gas, was a source of great interest. It was a tired but contented crowd tbat returned to Portland a little after midnight. But like tbe (east at Cana of Gallilce, Irotn an utilitarian point ot view, tbe beet was kept till the last, and on Sunday. Monday and Tuesday of this week tbe visitors were shown the Will amette valley, east and west sides, and the valley of ihe Umrxpa and Rogue rivers. Their special train running in two sec tions left PuriUnd at 7 o'clock Sunday morning and passed through the fertile fields of the counties of Washington, Yamhill. Polk and Benton, where thou sand of acres yet remain to be brought under cultivation, and oiler many at tractions for the bomeseeker. The green fields of Washington, the rolling hills of Yamhill the bopyards of folk and prune orchards of I'.enton were all point ed out. From Corvallis they crossed over to Albany and proceeded thence sontb. Tbe valleys of tbe I'mpqua and Rogue rivers wete iu gala attire, and the placer quartz mines contended with tbe fruit interests for tbe attention of the quill drivtr. Tbey all admitted tbat Oregon was a wondei'ul state of rich and varied reeoutcee. At Kugene on Tues day the visitors were eetyed with break fast prepared by the ladies of the city, on the summit of Skinners Butte, from which a magnitkient view oi the Upper Williamtlte valley and the Coast and Caecade ranges were obtained. This was the most unique feature of tbe itinerary, and w ill be remembered heu many other incidents are forgotten.
