Heed our county loses one of its lst citizens and our state one of its uiot-t efficient legislators. Senator Heed was born in tbe state of Maine, aud for 60ine years after Le arrived at the age of manhood followed the eu. but finally settled at Uardiuer. iu this county, where at th time of his death he was the owner of a large creamery, general merchandise store and salmon cannery, all of which he personally and successfully condncted. He was about 50 years of age. and always had the respect " and confidence of all classes. During all of his business career he never took nor asked a mortgage from his iellowniau. He was the poor man's friend in deed as well as word. Believing that a man with money shouid so ue it as to give employment to labor, he was al ways planning some new industry to create a demand for labor, and this policy of hi9 directly and indirectly gave work to hundreds in the commu nity where he lived. In 18'l he was elected a member of the lower house of our state legis tnre on the republican ticket aud served his term in a mauuer credit able to the county and himself, and in recognition of his services he was i iulS!2 nominated for state senator, but failed of electitu. and was renom inated in 18v't and won by a hand some majority. He had at the date of his untimely death just completed ; his term as state senator. Strong, both physically and intel lectually, he performed his legislative duties with tbe same untiring eu r gy, industry and care he brought to his -personal affairs. His integrity was above suspicion, and among his friends were the best aud ablest men of theitate. His youth was cnejof ie" sponsibility and toiL his whole life one ofjan wearied industry. Ai the time of his unfortunate decease he was devot ing his time to the public, iu laboring in company with Commissioners Mc Guire and Hubbard to select a suit able site for a fish hatchery to be erected in this county. Senator Reed was of the ambitious' heroic ragged, stern and aggressive mold of character, with n kind dispo portion and a generous heart. -He wofe the white flower of a blameless lifej' while but few roses made glad or ' marked his pathway of duty Stricken down in the urime of man hood, he left to mourn his untimely death his wife, a beantifal woman kind, graceful, cultured and refined, of delicate healtL. an affectionate dis position, and nervous temperament Being blessed with no children, she lavished the wealth of her affection epoa her husband, and the news of the time and manner of his death nearly severed the cords of life. We hope she will be comforted with the thought that he leave- a stainless oame and au unblemished reputa tion, and that all the people of this county, and many in the state are sharers in her grief. A livtajr example to Jevoaon to duty, be was secure in the affection of his fellow citizens. He passes into the night o! death to emerge, as we believe, into that shining realm wnere sorrow and darkness are unknown PROSPERITY f-OR FARMERS. In tbe campaign of lb' tbe farm ers were given especial attention by tbe managers of the silver party. All who tilled the soil were assured that low prices were the direct result of tbe treatment of silver and that values must inevitably continue to droop until the government con sented to coin at the old ratio all the silver that could be carried to the mint. This view of the case was backed up by an avalanche of silver literature, to say nothing of an earthquake of silver gabble. Farm ers know now that the prices of their product advance without the slight est regard to silver, and that tbe popocrat purpose in lb'-0 was to OTerwhelm them with financial falla cies and deception. In that year the value of domestic animals was cer Iainly low and demogogues charged tbe fact upon their great catchall, the alleged crime against silver. A chance is now presented to consider the subject freed from political ab surdities. The annual report of the depart ment of Agriculture states that tbe va)ne of horses in the United States bie'jinereased .iWOVWO within a yr; an average increase of more thip 20 per cent. Tbis has taken place in spite of the talk of a coming horseless era, CattK other than milk cows, increased V) per cent in yslae. Milk cows are worth 3:, 500,000 more at tbe end of the year than at tbe beginning. Sheep, which could hardly be given away tinder the last democratic tariff, in creased in valui 14,000,00V, and in number LIW.GOO. Mules also in creased in valnc. The total iacrease in a year in the value of domestic animals is placed at $10S,.'.";.S2, a gain 'of 5.71 per cent. The party that promisod prostierify, and was taken at, its word, has abundantly fulfilled tbe pledge, but tbe meas Bes of it good deed and beneficial inflaencofl ir hi ill piling np.
