Why do not tho hirmers of Doutilas
county raise more Kultry, and better
poultry? There is no letter or more
healthy meat for the table thau iniu'try,
and yet it is almost impuBsible lo obtain
a chicken, old or young; Urge or email
iu the city. Any kind of old hens sell
at from $3.50 to M pi r doaen and they
ai o bard to gel al that or auy pi Ice
Aud when you gut one r. is nuout as
large aa a crow and not much belter
adoptod (or table use. There ought to
be a hundred poultry ranches iu Douglas
county. There is money in it f r the
man or woman who wi'l go into the
business, as a business, ana uso some
judgment aud considerable industry in
connection with it. Portland ia one of
tue best poultry markets In the country
San Francisco is perhaps ibo best in the
United States, lluudreda ol carloads of
poultry nro fhipp'rd from thu middle
states to the J'aciilo Coast ivny year
aud Eastern poul'ty bring almost 11
third more per doitan iu the market thau
Oregon chickens. Tho reaaou for this is
that for years tho people of Oregon have
bred poultry for egg producer because
eggs formerly bi jugbt big prices. Now
the breed of chickens which produces
the gretitot-t number of cgs iu a year ie
not the beet (or table life. If farmers
would quit raining the smull breeds of
chickens and raieo tuo larger breeds,
they uou'd make money at it.

At about 10:45 last Monday night,

Tho tire department waa oou ou the

but so rapidly had the fire burned, that
itwaeBoon evident that uothing could
be dono ia the way of naving tbe main
building, and the boys turned their at

effective was their work in this direction
that uot only was the fire confined to
tbe warehouse, but the adjoioiDg building
used ss a boiler house, was saved. It
was fortunate for the owner of prop

of buildings bad been thoroughly soaked
by tin recent rains, as tbe fire was e

scattered over a largo area.
Tne building belonged to Hon. Sol

small amounts ol giain iu tbe building
and were probably not insuied. Donierj

feed in the building, but fortunately for
them, they were reasonably well in
