attempt last nigbt to burn tbe quarters
of the First Washington volunteers by
setting Gre to the huts adjoining their
quarters in the rear. Fortuna'ely the
wind clnnged at tha moment the fire
was discovered, and fanned by a et ff
breeze, tbe flames spread in tbe opposite
direction, destroying fully 20 shacks and
house jopposits the ruioa of the church.

New Train Service Still Talked Of.
While it is thought there is no immed
iate prospect of the talked of increase in
tbe train teivice of tbe Southern Pacific
Company httween Portland and San
Francitco, by extending tbe local traina
now running from Portland end Han
Francisco to Iiosebnrg and Portland,. re
spectively, lo a junction at Ashland, it is
known that the company bas been in
vestigating the cost of tbe Increased
service aud its advantages, in detail (or
several weeks past, possibly with the
view of having the data ready for nse at
such a time as it might be needed.
Tbe overland trains are very heavy
over tbe road between Roeeburg and
Redding, as a rule, and a great deal of
"helptr" service is required to handle
tbem on the heavy mountain grades.
By dividing the trains, whicb wonld be
the effect of an extension of tbe locals, a
great saving would result in the opers
'i in of the overland which would go a
good ways toward paying for tbe in
crease I expenses in extending the local
service.
If the propjsed extension of the local
trains should bo made, it bi probable
that their arrival and departure from
AsLland would be in tbe night, meeting
at or very near this point, at about 11
