Tbie mere outline wotiUl mailt an ex
traordinary lri i( mvoiuiilielied by a
company of tomists, ntiliing weii
known route and all tlio accexeorles of
modern travel, but it must be remem
bered (hut Mi . mid Mr. Mcllrath de
parted from tlio ufcliwaye of travel, pen
etrated into distti.'ta n jt touched by
totiritta, larely invaded even by the
most adventurous spiril'. The value of
their cxpeiietieeii is mainly in that they
weut etep by etep, mile by mile, into the
tenter of districts touched by the ordi
nary traveler only nlutit? tl;eboi Jer.
In going through Cliiiwi, the traveler
nailer usual riiviunaianct'e would go by
(ieamcr or revenue-boat up Ihe river
Yaug-ste, travel under escort of Chiueee
Boldieta or Uriiiah levcuuc uilkials to
the moil remote open port, arid go from
there nuder eecor!, if permitted, to the
eouthweeieru frontier, lie would receive
(air impreseioua uf life on the liver aud
in the cities, aud would have opportun
iiy to etudy Ihe oaravaus anJ individual
traveler along the route, hut he would
know comparatively little? uf the eople
or of actual conditions.
The Mcliratlis did, nut go up the iier
iu boats, but this way aud that along the
valley on wheels. They visited not only
the cities aud places uf inteiet. but the
villages and farms, went uuion the
hovels as well as into the palaces.
They ran through the b.uk alleys as
well a north' 1 along the highway
from uiole. They saw every phase of
life iu the iuterior of China. Their
work was not only that of the corres
poudeut of the tuutibt, but of the ex
I'lorer. Tliey went not ouly where the
door was open, but where it was closed.
They saw China, India and Persia not
only from tlielliihwayp, hv.t fiuiu the
bridle-paths and f j jt paths.
They were often in danger. Tuev had
many trying experiences. They were
Ihe central tigures in many hazardous
adventures. Their life oa the wheel
was as full of exciUuueut as ihat of a
rough rider in Cuba or a scout on tin old
Indian frontier. They were called upon
to bear exposure such as only soldiers
aud pioneers know. Toeir endurance
was tested as is that of a soldier on a
forced march cr in battle. Their coursge
was tried in the same way. Through it
all tbey forgot not their higher duties
as observers. They were true, under the
severest trials, to the instinct of the ex
plorer. Because of this their letters
from the lirst took strong hold on Ihe
people. So expedition r.f ujo.'ern times
baa so fire I the imaginations of young
and old, eo stirred the heart?, so excited
the interest of people everywhere.
Men, women, and children followed
the course of Dr. Mcllra'h and "The
Little Woman" with unwavering in
terest, anxious when they were iu dan
ger, exultant when they triumphed over
difficulties, greiving when trouble come
to them, rejoicing when their safety,
after a long silence, was announced. M
this and more found expression in the
welcome yesterday.
The Mcllratha have not only seen
wonderful things, passed through extra'
ordinary experiences and adventures,
but they have contributed largely to the
world's stock of information. They
were welcomed not only as bicycliets
who bad gone around tlio world, but as
persons taking high rank among Ihe
brave spirits who have made reputations
as explorers.
