An Explod ed Fallacy. It was the idea when we first began to manufacture big guns that tbe larger onee were good lor only a certain num ber of firings, and that then it was not safe to use them. But our American guns have proved the fallacy ot this sap position. Tbe guns on foreign ships have worn out in timed past, and it was supposed that oera might do the same when nsed too much. But such has not been the case. Nearly all our big guns have been fired more than one hundred times, and none ot them have ret shown any sign of weakness. This shows that tbe guns manufactured in the United States are ot a better quality. The manufacturers here surmounted the de fect of tbe European guns, and 13-inth guns sre now found to be as capable of frequent firing as the guns of smaller calibre. Any one wishing to purchase "Balm ol Figs" can do so by calling on or ad dressing Mas. Assie Becklbt, 602 Case St., Itoseburg, Or. Building a Face. The surgeons connected with St. Cath erine's hospital, In the borough of Brook lyn, have in prospect a task which is likely to attract world-wide attention. John Wagonblast, a few daya ago, while carlessly handling a shotgun, blew off tbe front and left side ol bis lace. The doctors are planning to build him an artificial lace by what is known si plastic surgery. The work will be in charge ol Dr. J. C. Kennedy, visiting surgeon at the hospital, and Dr. Jatars 8. Stavin, the bouse sorgeon. Surgeon Stayin says : "Tbe first step will be to replace the nose by one ot robber or celluloid. We shall draw op tbe skin on either side ol tbe new nose so that it will slightly over lap the edge, The cheek boneand the bone over the eye will be replaced by plates ol silver or platinum. We hope to be able to use the old root of tbe mouth without sny plates and to save the teeth. When once we can get tbe nose and plate in place, and tbe process ol healing has advanced ws will begin grafting skin on tbe bare surface. Tbe skin we will take from tbe man's thighs. It will require a long time and much patience on the part ol tbe suffering man, but wo hope to make a respectable job ol him before we are through. The last step will be to replace tbe lost eye with one ol glass." New stock oi ladies sod misses' floe shoes, sll tbe latest styles, Jtut received at Parrott Uros.
