Now, llirnc turn turn conic foraard
and xradt tnrdves at the only tmo
republicans of the slate, ami Mr. Cvr
belt and Mr. Siinan, the leaders of this
lotfialalive held up, im-ii-ttlial t'n y are
' Ibo proper and logical rulivLtit for
senator and iht tn.o or the other
bould be elected.
1 auhmit to yon, Mr. i: Ji tor, mid t. l
concerned, I did loilie late logisla
lure lieu I was willing to naive my
candidacy, although the l oiuince of the
party assisted, there are many promin
ent ' republicans residing in difffrrnt
portions of the ttate.iCexclusive not
ouly of lujsrlf but also of the
men ho where prominent in
this diagracelul legislative held op. and
. who promoted and engineered it, and
tbe names uf somo ot the more promin
ent of whom I have iiieulioued , and
republicans who have r.ot been promin
ent in any of the factional fights in Ore
goo, who would, it elected, be a credit to
the parly, the stale and nation. The
names of some of these gentlemen hare
been mentioned by jour .sa!etu cerrts
pondent, namely, Mr. (Jeer, Mr. Uer
mann, Mr. Fulton, Mr, Uatch, Mr.
George, Judge Uurnett, Judge lean aod
ex-Judge Hewitt, ami any of whom, if
elected, would be an houor to the stale
and the rtpublicau party, while in ad
dition to thoeo mentioned by your cor
respondent there are a number of ethers
in different sections of the state who
would come within the category. All of
these gentlemen are true republican;,
and clean, able men, while not one of
them is embarraeed either in micd or
bly with aoy of those infirmities in
separable from nge.
Tbe election of any of these gerit'e
tuen, it ii su'-tniiied, or of that of any
one of nutrbers of othf ts whese names
might be meutiuiied, nil! tend to the
destruction tf factions, and to the unifi
cation of the party, while the eUctiou if
any of the men who were proiuiucul in
the legislative hold up, and notably that
of Mr. Corbett or Mr. Simon, the ring
leaders and revenue producers cf that
anarchistic proceeding, will hut tend to
perpetuate factional strife and would re
sult ultimately iu the disintegration of
the party.
Since the adjournment of the legisla
ture .!n March, ISI'7, although continu
ally subjected to gross miereprescnta'ion
and abuse by vindictive journalists and
subsidized peuny-a-linei j, 1 Law held
uiy peace.
I have not responded, either by
speech, letter or interview, trusting and
believing by quietly withdrawing taw
self from politics as a candidate for the
senate or aoy other office, that the lapse
of time would ultimately develop a bet
ter general knowledge of the real facta
connected with the legislative hold-up,
and at the same time awaken to Eome
degree a sense of justice in tbe minds- of
even malignant partisan opponent?.
Tbe republican party aod the state of
Oregon have honored me as they have
' never honored any other of its citizens.
For three full terms they have given me
a Beat in tbe senate of tbe United States
while on two other occasions I have
been the choice as expressed in party
caucus as the candidate of the party for
United States seoator. I have, there
fore, no political claims either upon tbe
party or the state, and do not intend
further to make ony. I am frank to con
less I was earnestly desirous of re-e!ec
lion at tbe close of my last term, as my
position on committees in the senate was
second to none in that bodv either in
dignity, influence or power, a position
that no new senator, whatever may be
his ability or tact, cau, under the rules
and ptactices of the senate, hope to at
tain short of a serWce of at least twelve
years, and I was therefore in a position
to have done much tor the state and
coast. But, as the matter stands today
bavins firmly determined many months
since I would not be a candidate for re
election, I have but one ambition and
that is that I may re-establish myself iu
my profession in this city and state, and
have and retain the respect and conli
deuce of the people, irrespective of arty
of tbe3tate that ha? thus bo highly hon
ored me.
Whatever may be said to the contrary,
I have the gratification of knowiug that
duriug the eighteeu ears of my servico
in tbe senate I have endeavored to labor
faithfully and roiiscientiuufely for what I
believed to be the beet interests of the
siate, the coast and nation: au J Lever
during all that period did I cast a vote oil
any (jutstion, made a party issue in (he
senate, except with the republican party,
nor did I ever cast a vote duriug all that
period on any tjueeliuu that was contra
ry to tho platform of thu republicun
party of the state upou which thu legis
lature which elected rue w as elected.
Norwithstanding these facts, and not
withstanding the positiou of myself auJ
friends at tbe present time in reference
to the approaching senatorial content, I
shall of course expect that myself and
friends will in the future, as iu the past,
be the subject of gross misrepresenta
tion and abuse by tho oigaus of that fac
tion which organised and carried into
aucueesful execution the conspiracy
against the large majority of the repub
licans In the late legislature.
Further than as a'iove indicated I do
not Intend personally to take any part lu
the approaching suuutoiiul contest. On
the coutraiy I expect iu a few day to
leave for Wufcbiugton City, to be present
at tba opening ot the supremo court of
the United States where. I have profes
sional business calling me, and there
fore do not expect to bn either at Salem
or In tbe state during tbe contest.
In conclusion, availing royielf, Mr.
Editor, of this opKrtnnity of thanking
you for (he absolute fairness with which
you have iuvmiablr treated me aod my
