the bed and covered himself up with a
blanket, while some of the other boys

We take 100 pounds of flour to the

for it. We have received mail three
times since the 4th of June, and are
anxiously waiting to Lear from home
again. Part of the 1th expedition ar
rived this morning and I received seme
mail which was very acceptable.
Saw quite a number of Chinese paid
olf today. They received 20 cents er

Hoppicking is completed. The season
was. very favorable to the growth aud
maturing of the hop crop. Hop drying
and baling is now in piogrcss.
Harvest of all products is practically
completed. Lata fruit is lcing packed
and shipped, ti races aie ripeniug.
The gracs is turning grceu. Work has
commenced (or next vest's crop. The
sea.sou has been favoiable to tho tillers
of the soil.
Aututu weather conditions have set
in. More rain, lower temperature and
fro.sty moiniugs may uow lie expected.
Dae'.eru Oregon weather. The mean
temperature for the week averaged PI,
which was 7 lower thau for the preced
ing week and S lower than for the cor
responding week of lal year. The
highest temperature during the week
was 0, which occurred on several days,
and the lowest was 30, on Fridav uioru
iug. Frost occurred over the Tlaleau
ltfgion on several mornings. Uaiu to

inch fell on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Crops. Harvest is over: only a small
amount of grain..' yet remains to bo
threshed. The seasuu has been one of
the most favorable ou record for the
grain crop aud (or crops o( all kinds.

The raiu started the grass aud sprout
ed the early sown grain. Considerable
grain is sown every year iu tho dust and
the first rains give it a good start, fas

Fruit is maturing and is being shipped
Tue fruit crop is uuneuilly large: the
same is true of toe vegetable nop
Work for the crops cf next year has
comuieuced.

The crop reason of lS'JS has been a most
successful one. itic grain crop, as a
whole, is excellent. Aphis injured
spring grain iu a few of the Willamette
counties. Uope were cleaner and of
better quality than for years.
The hay crop has never been larger or
bo'.ter. The fruit crop has been heavy.
The vegetable crop is alwat 8 good and
it was equal to the best this year. Stock
went through the early w inter in good
coadit:ou ; owing to sales the ranje ia
not now crowded.
No item of industry has been affected
by any adverss conditions, hence the
record of a successful year.

have beea fixing up the ijuartcrr, to
that we are getting iu good bhape, and

good health. 1 think it is lots healthier
here than at Cavite. Dewey is having a
lot of steam launches raised that the
Spauiards had 6unk when we touic the
city. I had u pass with Serg'te'. Crow
con and 1'racht from our company from
10 a. m. uutil 0 p. ui., and went over
into New Manila. After walking around
awhile we "boarded the tlrect cars and
rode to the cuds of all the lines. Kir
closed tiud receipt? which every one re
ceives ou the payment of hie or her fare.
You can ride a long diotunco here for
two cents Spanish, which is about one
cent in our money. It looks funny to
soe the little Shetland ponies pulling
those largo street cars. Some places
they have only onu horse, others two
aud three. Our or today, jumped the
track and landed erossways of both tracks
and it was a picnic to watch the l'ili-
piuos jump off.
When tho car stopped we were the
only pabsengers left ou the car. We
were also out to Malate, where the
Eighteenth had a scrap with tho Span,
ieh about the 1st of July. We hired a
cab to come home in aud tbu driver ran
into another cab aud nearly turned us
over.
I am quite sleepy now and will close
for tonight. Will write more in the
morning, if possible, before the mail
closes. Hamlin, Shambroak, Klocum,
Day aud Brown are all feeling tpiite well
and are anxious to still for the I . S.
