the first of this year when the verdict of
the lower court was sustained. The con
demned man has been fearful of deatb
from the start and when resentenced at
it e. last term of the circuit court he

Polk County' Tempi of Justice In
Ashes.
Dallas June lOtb 1809. The Polk
county court, at Dallas, Is a mass ol
smouldering rains. It was entirely con
sumed this morning between 2 o'clock
and daylight by a Or ol incendiary ori
gin, A great many of Ihe county's val
uable records are lost. The papers of the
county clerk were in a fire proof vanlt
and were not injured and tbe records of
the county (restorer are probably safe;
the others were destroyed in tbe confla
gration.
Tbe fire was discovered at 'Z o'clock
this morning, but at that time tbe flames
had gaioed such Leadwsy that to combat
them was an impossibility. Great lurid
tongues of fire were bursting from every
part of tbe building and no intelligent
gueas can be given as to bat pait of Ihe
Structure was burniog first. Tbe front
plate on the door to the rheriff'a office
was blown off and it is believed from
this that tbe door was blown open by dy
namite and afterwards set on Cre, or
probably the fire followed the explosion
as a natural sequence.
Every one believes .the fire to have
been the work of an incendiary, bat
there are no well defined suspicions as to
who the culprit is.
It is believed that all the records and
billotiof the election were destroyed.
but as the official count had been made
and certified to, tbe los 1 cannot possibly
effect the result.

Charles Morris, father of Richard

The 'deceased resided in Salem for
several years where be was proprietor of

left Salem and went to Oakland where
he has since lived.

are bis wife and two sous and a daughter,
vie: Richard, of Salem, Gas, a telegraph
operator at Ashland, Jackson couniy,
and Mrs. Jessie Ray, of Oakland.
He will be buried at Dallas, Polk
county, tomorrow.

Thrown From a Wagon.
Mab.-ufieljj, Or., June 9. About 2
o'clock this afternoon, while R. Pridgeon
was driving a teani of spirited horses on
the way to liie racetrack, they became
frightened and ran away. A boy, named
Walter Micklin, who was ou the wagou
with Pridgeon, was Ihrowu out. His
skull was fractured and bo died ia about
two hoars. Pridgeon was also thrown
out, but sustained no serious injaries.
